Girls’ Soccer Finishes Season One Win Shy of State Title

The Quakers recorded 16 wins before falling in the state championship game. Head coach Bill Mulvihill sits down with Patch sports editor Jim Vassallo to talk about the season.

Record: 16-4-2

Graduating Seniors: Allie Smith, Carly Taglienti, Christine Hill, Haleigh Dalmass, Julia Yedman, Steph Toy, Alex DeAngelis, Jenna McAvoy and Rebecca Schultz

The team’s unsung hero: This team was full of unsung heroes: Rebecca Schultz, Haleigh Dalmass, Carly Taglienti, Jenna McAvoy, and Alyssa Lukridge to name a few. All these girls had great years and flew under the radar most of the season.

How the seniors influenced the team: This senior class will go down as one of the best senior classes I have ever coached. They worked hard the entire season, they kept the team all on the same page, and they genuinely cared for each other. They all accepted their roles on the team and guided this team back to the state final—simply incredible.

Most improved player: In my opinion, a lot of girls improved throughout the season, but the biggest improvement was Rebecca Schultz. She was a good goalie who turned herself into a great goalie. Once she gained her confidence, she was remarkable and would come up with big saves that would keep us in games and gave us a chance to win.

What he'll miss most about the seniors: How well they all got along with each other and how they all supported one another. They were also an extremely funny bunch of girls who made me laugh all the time, especially on bus rides to away games.

The talent level of this year’s team: I would not say that this was the most talented team I ever coached, but by far the team that raised its level of play higher and higher with each game played. Every team has a different identity to it, and this team will surely go down as one of most successful teams I have ever coached.

Overall thoughts on the season: I told the girls right after (state championship) that in my eyes they are champions and I do not need a win in our last game of the year to validate that. What this team gave us this year was truly remarkable, each and every one of them are champions, and they should be extremely proud of their accomplishments.

Building for 2012: The foundation for the next couple of years has been established by this year’s team and the leadership we got from the captains and seniors. We need to continue to build on that and realize that in order to succeed, we need to bring the work ethic in every game if we would like to get back for another shot at winning a title.
