Girls’ Volleyball Finishes 20-Win Season with Sectional Finals Appearance

A 20-9 record and an appearance in the sectional finals has the Quakers looking toward a bright future.

The Quakers graduated a handful of , so the coaching staff planned on finding out early this season what type of players they had at the varsity level.

It didn't take long, with the Quakers winning their first five games before losing to Cherokee.

Moorestown finished with a 20-9 record and an appearance in the South, Group 3 Tournament. The Quakers lost in the sectional finals to West Windsor-Plainsboro South 2-1 to end the season.

Head coach Scott Atkinson said the seniors on this year’s squad helped lead the Quakers to a deep playoff run with their leadership, hard work, and dedication to the team.

“This group had a strong desire to do well, to represent themselves well, and I think they did,” Atkinson said.

As with all teams, for the Quakers to have a successful season, they needed some of their younger players to step up and their varsity players to improve as the season wore on.

“We had so many, and most of them never got a chance to get on the varsity floor. Our freshmen were great this year. I think they will be leading this program for some time,” Atkinson explained. “We had several players improve between August and November; Taylor Johns, Carly Nutt, Isabelle Sussman all come to mind."

The Quakers also had a couple of unsung heroes, players who constantly made an impact on the court but flew under the radar of their opponents.

“We had a few: Kiera McCool, Alia Pitts, and Tori DeBerardinis. It's hard to say varsity starters are 'unsung,' but I think all three, especially Kiera, played hard with little or no recognition of their efforts (from outside the team),” Atkinson said.

The coaching staff began preparing for next season not long after the team’s playoff loss in the sectional finals.

“The coaches begin to game plan on the ride home," Atkinson said, "and by the time we hit the Monday after, we have a pretty good idea of what internal changes we, the coaches, have to make to improve our program."
