Moorestown Bests Ridgewood in State Semifinal

The Quakers' lacrosse team eliminates the Maroons, and move onto the final match.

The Quakers defeated the Ridgewood Maroon, 8-2, in the semifinal round of the NJSIAA  Group 3 Lacrosse Tournament Saturday, extending their playoff run and advancing to the group final.

After its dominating 14-1 victory over Jackson in the quarterfinal round played on Thursday, the Maroons turned in a less than stellar performance on the hot, steamy turf of Ridgewood Stadium on Saturday.

“We played young, especially in the offensive side of the field,” said Ridgewood coach Mike Pounds. “[We had] way too many quick possessions. When you give a good team like [Moorestown] quality possessions and you come down and turn it over or take a quick shot in 20-30 seconds, you just put too much on your defense.”

Moorestown jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first quarter. Kyle Engle scored for the Quakers with just over two minutes left in the first quarter and Michael Handlin hit the back of the net with only 40 seconds left in the period.

Max Luing scored in the second for the Maroons on an assist by Peter Reuter, but that was as close as this game would get as the Quakers tallied twice in the second and held a 4-1 lead at halftime.

Ridgewood did have several other scoring chances in the period which could have completely changed game, but it just couldn’t seem to finish off the plays to take advantage of those opportunities.

In the meantime, Moorestown seemed to just feed off of their first-half success.

“They outplayed us in the energy department,” said Pounds. “We were able to match them at times; we just never seemed to be able to exceed them.”

In the third quarter, Vann Jorgenson send a pass to Conner O’Shea who zipped a shot by the goalie to score for the Maroons, but it just wasn’t enough to get Ridgewood’s offense untracked.

Moorestown responded with three goals in the final period to put the game away to allow the Quakers to advance to the Group 3 Final.
