Moorestown, Moorestown Friends Play for Tennis Titles Monday

Also, the Moorestown High School football team fell by one point to Timber Creek.

The Moorestown High School and Moorestown Friends girls' tennis teams will play for South Jersey championships on Monday.

Following last week’s 5-0 win over Woodrow Wilson, top-seeded Moorestown remained undefeated and hasn’t given up a set in two playoff matches.

No. 1 Moorestown defeated No. 8 Pinelands, 5-0, in the quarterfinals of the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 3 playoffs, according to nj.com.

First singles player Breezy Maravich defeated Kalina Acosta, 6-1, 6-0, and third singles player Alex Boone downed Julia Driscoll, 6-0, 6-2.

Moorestown’s Kelly Hopkins saw a little bit of a fight at second singles, but vanquished Caitlin Gobel, 6-3, 6-3.

The first doubles team of Siena Cashan and Anna Mary Shetler gave up two games in the first set, but defeated Dana Rose Brown and Jamie Cohalan, 6-2, 6-0.

The second doubles squad of Andrea Giocobbo and Nori Horvitz shut out Cassidy Buckley and Mikeala Crowley, 6-0, 6-0.

On Thursday, Moorestown (15-2) defeated No. 4 Cumberland, 5-0, in the semifinals.

Moorestown will face No. 3 Seneca in the final on Monday.

Seneca advanced to the final by beating Hammonton and Toms River South by 5-0 scores, and Mainland by a score of 3-2.

No. 1 Moorestown Friends defeated No. 8 St. Rose, 5-0, in the quarterfinals of the NJSIAA South Jersey Non-Public B playoffs, according to nj.com.

First and second singles players Grace Kim and Jessica Ferber cruised to victories. Kim defeated Madison Sarnasi, 6-0, 6-0. Ferber downed Alexis Wolf, 6-0, 6-0.

The third singles match was slightly more competitive, as Katie Teitelbaum conquered Marina Kaiafas, 6-1, 6-3.

The first doubles team of Erin Chen and Paige Hurley started off strong, but had to fight a little harder in the second set, defeating Katie Gilligan and Mary Schweiker, 6-0, 7-5.

The second doubles squad of Lilla Butterworth and Alexandra Katsnelson defeated Gianna Longo and Megan Quinn, 6-4, 6-2.

Moorestown Friends then defeated No. 4 Ranney, 5-0, in the semifinals.

Kim defeated Kristen Guyler, 6-0, 6-0; Ferber downed Giulia DiGuglelmo, 6-2, 6-2; and Teitelbaum defeated Olivia Nisbet, 6-1, 6-0.

Meanwhile, Chen and Hurley defeated Rachel Patel and Julianna Poupard, 6-2, 6-1; and Butterworth and Katsnelson defeated Paulina Brake and Sabrina Park, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 7-6.

Moorstown Friends will face No. 2 Gill St. Bernard’s in the finals on Monday. Gill St. Bernards advanced to the finals with a pair of 5-0 wins over Rutgers Prep and Wardlaw-Hartridge.

Kim also advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles tournament before falling to Pingry’s Madison Stevens..

She received a first-round bye.

In the second round, she defeated Montville’s Kaitlin Sanzone, 6-0, 6-0.

In the third round, she ousted East Brunswick’s Jennifer Chen, 6-0, 6-4.

In the fourth round, she eliminated Chatham’s Scarlett Blydenburgh, 6-2, 6-4.

In the quarterfinals, she fell to Stevens, 6-1, 6-3.

Football

Timber Creek 7, Moorestown 6: All the scoring came in the second quarter.

Dan Williams tossed a 25-yard pass to Cameron Chambers for a score, and Timber Creek prevailed on the extra point kick by Justin Gonzalez.

Moorestown scored on a blocked punt, returned 20 yards for a touchdown by Yuseph Green.

Timber Creek improved to 4-1, and will host Lenape on Friday night, 7 p.m.

Moorestown fell to 2-3, and will host Camden on Friday night, 7 p.m.
