Moorestown Volleyball Sweeps Pennsauken 2-0

The Quakers dominated Pennsauken in two consecutive games, earning their 12th win of the season.

Taking advantage of their superior height, the Quakers rolled over Pennsauken Tuesday following a bumpy patch in their schedule.

Moorestown came into its game against Pennsauken with a two-game losing streak hanging over the team. The Quakers (12-5) used their size to defeat the Indians, taking consecutive games.

The Quakers went on an 8-0 run in the first game before Pennsauken even scored its first point, en route to a 25-7 win to go up 1-0 on the afternoon. Moorestown used its height up front to block multiple returns at the net to grab points.

“Our middles do a good job. It did give us a little bit of an advantage," head coach Scott Atkinson said. "They are not a very big team—they pass well—but they are not a big team. We focus on that when we know we’ve got a height advantage."

The 8-0 run to begin the game helped the Quakers play with confidence and determination in not only the first game of the afternoon, but also in the second and final game en route to the sweep.

“It helps tremendously to get off to a good start. Volleyball is such a game of streaks and if you start to apply that pressure early, then the other team’s got to start to hustle and they lose a point and it starts to snowball,” Atkinson said.

In game two, the Quakers raced out to a 24-7 lead, needing one point to secure the win, but allowed Pennsauken to score five consecutive points before recording the match point to close out the game. Moorestown won game two by a score of 25-12, which meant game three did not have to be played.

“We struggled with communicating at the beginning of the season," Anna Allende said. "It was a new team, a lot of new players, but we’ve really picked it up because we know how everyone plays."

Coach Atkinson and the players agree the serving has improved the most over the past few weeks, helping the Quakers record three wins, moving their season record to 12-5.

“I just think we’ve picked our serving up a lot, which is helping get on runs and not losing stupid points,” Lauren Leskow said.

The Quakers travel to Lawrenceville this afternoon for a 5:15 p.m. game.
