Poker Tournament Saturday Benefits Moorestown Youth Baseball

Payouts for the top five winners, plus door prizes and a silent auction, at Lenola Fire Hall.

Contribute to a good cause while competing to win a bunch of money this weekend at a sponsored by Moorestown Youth Baseball.

Adam Gerber, a baseball coach and 2007 U.S. Poker champion, is hosting the event at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the . The tournament begins at 6:30 and goes to 10:30. All proceeds from the tournament will go toward improvements and maintenance for the baseball facilities in town, he said.

Gerber, who’s played poker professionally since he was very young, has organized roughly 10 charity poker tournaments in the last few years.

“We’ve never had a bad one yet,” he said, and doesn’t expect this one to be any different.

There are 150 seats available (at $150 apiece, including food and beverage), as well as $30 tickets (also including food and drink) for spectators. There will also be several door prizes and a silent auction, with items like floor seats at a 76ers game and Flyers paraphernalia, Gerber said.

Tickets are available at the door, but Gerber advised those interested in playing to register online because “seats are filling up fast.”

Speaking with Moorestown Patch on Wednesday, he said they’d already sold 50 seats—which for a poker tournament is actually quite good, according to Gerber. “Poker players are typically slow to sign up. They’re very lazy. To have 50 sold already is amazing.”

The top five finishers will receive payouts (in the form of a bank card) and the following seven winners will also receive prizes, he said.

The tournament is open to anyone, semi-pro and amateur alike. But if anyone’s worried about getting into any Casino Royale-type situations, fear not, said Gerber.

“If you’re thinking you’re coming out and seeing major professional poker players, you’re not,” he said. “The whole point is just to have fun.”
