Recreation Department Offers New Travel Teams

Soccer and field hockey players can get out of town

The Moorestown Recreation Department this fall is expanding its travel team options for young soccer and field hockey players. In response to declining enrollment, Moorestown has joined the Friendship Soccer League, made up of teams from nearby towns such as Maple Shade, Cinnaminson and Delran, said Director Theresa Miller.

“It’s still very low-key,” said Miller. “It’s still based on having fun and learning the game. And the price is nominal.”

Last year, the department entered one team in the Friendship League as a pilot program.

“It was a great success,” said Miller. “We got great feedback from parents and kids and coaches.”

Boys and girls in kindergarten through 2nd grade will still play all their games in town, but those in 3rd through 8th grades will play in the travel league.

The cost for all travel soccer divisions (U-10, U-12 and U-14) is $45.

Recreational field hockey players in 5th and 6th grades will have the option this year to play in the Pinelands Field Hockey league, an opportunity previously available only to 7th and 8th grade players. The department will continue to offer intramural leagues to players in grades 1 through 6.

The registration deadline for fall sports is Friday, Aug. 19. Register and pay online at www.moorestownrec.com or at the recreation office, 2 Executive Drive, Suite 9A. For more information, call (856) 914-3093 or (856) 235-0912, ext. 3025 or 3026.
