Senior Profile: Volleyball Captain Marisa Randazzo

Moorestown Patch sports editor Jim Vassallo speaks with Marisa Randazzo about volleyball, college plans, classes and the future in this week's installment of Senior Profile.

Marisa Randazzo has established herself as a team leader early in her senior season for the volleyball team, a program that has seen plenty of talented players.

Randazzo helped lead the Quakers to a 4-2-1 record to begin the 2011 season. The girls volleyball team is looking to return to the playoffs this season and advance even further than the past couple years.

Moorestown Patch and Randazzo put aside some time to chat about volleyball, sports in general, college plans, and the future in this week’s senior profile.

Moorestown Patch: Do you play any other sports?

Marisa Randazzo: Yes, basketball and lacrosse.

Patch: How do you juggle your time while constantly being in practice or on the field?

Randazzo: I have always played three sports and it has definitely taught me to manage my time. I actually get better grades during season than in between them. When I get home from practice or a game, I know I only have a certain amount of time to do homework/study before it gets late so I usually start it right away. I tend to procrastinate when I am not playing a sport.

Patch: What is it like to be a captain?

Randazzo: Being captain can be fun, yet stressful at the same time. My co-captains (Jules Downey and Kiera McCool) and I have to be leaders for the team to follow. When the team is not playing well, we have to be the ones to pick us back up. One of the best parts of being a captain is planning psych parties and gatherings for the team to do together. We always have so much fun together.

Patch: Do you plan on playing volleyball in college?

Randazzo: I am committed to play lacrosse at Fairfield already, but I am considering playing club or intramural volleyball.

Patch: What got you so interested in volleyball?

Randazzo: One of my best friends who graduated last year, Kellen McGinley, told me she was playing and I decided to try out going into freshman year.

Patch: What is so enjoyable about volleyball for you?

Randazzo: Everything. It is not just one thing; one of the many factors is the quickness of the game.

Patch: If there was one thing you could teach the younger players on the team before the season is over, what would it be?

Randazzo: To be able to have fun and smile on the court. I can never hold back a smile when I do something good. I used to get embarrassed when I smile, but now I realize that it makes the game so much more fun.

Patch: What are your favorite classes and why?

Randazzo: Anatomy and Physiology. I find it so interesting and cannot wait to be a nurse.

Patch: What has been the highlight of your volleyball career so far?

Randazzo: The highlight of my volleyball career is just seeing how far this year's varsity team has come. We are getting better and better every day and I cannot wait to see where we go.

Patch: What is the most important thing the coaching staff has taught you in your time on the squad?

Randazzo: How to be a leader.
