A dogfight may be putting it mildly for the matchup between West Deptford and Haddon Township's boys basketball teams Thursday night.
Staying neck-and-neck with the Hawks all night, West Deptford managed to pull off a win—beating Haddon Township by just one point.
The game started off in a similar fashion, as West Deptford held onto a one-point lead over the Hawks with a score of 11-10 at the end of the first quarter. West Deptford only managed to expand their lead by a slim margin, ending the half 24-20.
With Haddon Township gaining a little more momentum in the second half, the Hawks outscored the Eagles for the third and most of fourth quarter. Yet, thanks to a game winning layup in the last three seconds of the fourth quarter, Mike Gardner delivered a win for West Deptford with a final score of 50-49.
In addition to Gardner, who scored 13 of West Deptford’s 50 points, T.J. Harcum and Tyler Leonhardt were among the top scorers of the night with 11 and 10 points, respectively. In addition, other scorers included Marquise Owens, Luke McKeown, Sean Langan and Brian Kuda.
After earning the No. 6 seed in South Jersey Group 2 last week, the Eagles go on with a record of 16-8. West Deptford is home against Schalick at noon on Feb. 18 and away at Palmyra on Feb. 21 at 6:30 p.m.
