Wrestlers Win Titles

Tyreek Smith and Niles Turner come out on top at War at the Shore.

Wrestlers Tyreek Smith and Niles Turner took first place at the War at the Shore tournament this past weekend at the Wildwood Convention Center.

Smith, an eighth-grader, won the 190 pounds intermediate division.

Turner, a seventh-grader who weighs 196 pounds, wrestled as an intermediate in the 250 max division for his title.

“They did very well,” said Ed Nice, who runs the Jr. Quakers wrestling program.

Nice said he brings kids to tournaments throughout the spring and summer.

“It keeps the kids fresh,” he said.

In addition to Turner and Smith, juniors Tom Forline and Ernesto Padilla and freshman Zach Nice also attended the tournament competing in the high school division.

Forline, wrestling at 191 pounds, went 4-2.

“This matches have dedicated, more serious wrestlers competing,” said Nice. “It’s a lot tougher to get the wins.”

Wrestling in these types of tournaments, however, will pay off in the long run.

“That’s why we’re doing it,” Nice said.
