Friends Remember 'Bandana Man' Joe McGovern with 5K Run

McGovern, a familiar face for many Moorestonians, died suddenly two years ago.

Even if you didn't know his name, chances are you knew who Joe McGovern was.

Often seen running throughout Moorestown, McGovern was dubbed "The Bandana Man" by many for the signature American-flag bandana he wrapped around his head during his almost daily runs, according to family friend Bob Kennedy.

McGovern passed away suddenly in March 2011 from heart complications.

In order to remember him, Kennedy and others have organized a 5k for this Saturday, the first (of what they hope to be many) Joe McGovern Scholarship 5k Fun Run. Proceeds from the event will go toward scholarships for one male and one female student athlete at Moorestown High School.

Kennedy described McGovern—who was an environmental attorney for Parker McCay and author of three novels, all of which had environmental undertones—as a "terrific, terrific man" who had many friends, many of whom sought a way to honor his memory. Given his love of running, the 5k seemed a fitting tribute.

"We have a tendency to remember (people) during funerals, or eulogies. That lasts for a week or so," said Kennedy. "But the memory is never really kept alive unless you do something like this."

The race is also being held in tribute to McGovern's family, chiefly his wife Lisa and children Joseph McGovern Jr. and Brittany McGovern.

Lisa—who, fittingly, met McGovern while on a run together in college—described her husband as a humble man who helped many, often doing pro bono legal work for those in need.

"It was all because he thought he was doing God's work," she said, explaining how so many people showed up for his viewing that police had to direct traffic outside. "He never knew how many friends he had."

The 5k will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday on the cross country trails behind Moorestown High School. Registration is $20.

Kennedy said the organizers are hoping to raise approximately $5,000, some of which will likely be used to create an endowment for future scholarships.

Parker McCay is the chief sponsor of the race.

Those wishing to register for the race in advance and/or make a donation can sign up here. Runners can also sign up the day of the race beginning at 3 p.m.

Following the race, participants are invited to gather at Iron Hill Brewery in Maple Shade, a favorite spot of McGovern and his family, for a celebratory drink.
