Moorestown Improvement Association Seeks New Members

Moorestown's oldest civic organization will hold its annual meeting Friday night at the Community House.

The Moorestown Improvement Association (MIA), Moorestown’s oldest civic organization, is in the midst of its annual membership drive. All Moorestown citizens are welcome and encouraged to join and support the Improvement Association.  

At 7:15 p.m. Friday, March 30, the MIA will hold its annual meeting at the . All members, and interested members, are welcome to attend. The featured speaker will be from Virtua, to present on the healthcare organization’s commitment to Moorestown through its .

The MIA is dedicated to preserving and enhancing the quality of life in Moorestown. It was founded in 1904 and is led by a board of trustees who meet eight times annually to guide programs and activities.  

The annual membership dues vary, depending upon the type of membership. Individual membership is $10 a year, family memberships are $15, commercial memberships $25, and industrial memberships are $50. Membership dues and a form are on the association website at www.moorestownimprovement.org, and can be mailed to PO Box 404, Moorestown, NJ 08057.

Currently, the MIA supports the shade tree program in Moorestown by making annual dedicated contributions to the township’s tree planting program. The association also sponsors two scholarship programs for students: the Moorestown Improvement Association Scholarship and the Ellen Shiplee Memorial Scholarship.  

The MIA started the , which incorporate both architecture and history in guided tours of Moorestown neighborhoods, and published a 32-page walking tour guide in 1992. The MIA holds these tours typically on a semi-annual basis.

In 108 years, the MIA has had considerable impact on the quality of life in Moorestown. A complete listing of accomplishments can be found on the website. A brief list of accomplishments include the first brick and concrete sidewalks in Moorestown (1905), the first movies played in Moorestown (1914), initiating and supporting the community’s shade tree program, planning the transformation of Hooten Creek into (1937), supported the township manager/council program of local government, as guided by the Faulkner Act (1950s and ‘60s), campaigning to keep Interstate 295 from coming through Moorestown (1954), efforts to preserve and recognize historical districts (1970-1990s), and was a major supporter in saving (1992).
