Perkins Center Reaches Goal for Renovations

The project is expected to begin in late spring and wrap up this summer.

In case you missed the good news last week, —after roughly a year of fundraising—has reached its goal and will soon begin refurbishing the century-old building it calls home.

The non-profit's goal was $40,000, which it reached at the beginning of last week, according to Lee Bennett, Perkins’ project and special events manager. A late surge in donations from members of the community, as well as staff and board members at Perkins, pushed them slightly over the top, reaching a total of $40,210.

Bennett said they've already sent out bids to local painting companies and hope to begin the work by late spring and finish the project by early summer.

The total scope of the project will include stripping the paint from both the carriage house and main building—which are both listed on the National and State Registers of Historic Buildings and were last painted more than 17 years ago—and applying a new coat, as well as some minor repairs.

"The painting project is not just to make Perkins look better," Bennett said, explaining that the improvements will also allow the arts center to sustain all of its programs.
