New, Old Moorestown Holiday Traditions Highlight Week Ahead

Also, the Church Street Recreation Center will host a pair of events this weekend.

Moorestown will bookend the first week in December with two holiday traditions: one brand-new, and another fairly old.

The Community House will host the township's first community Christmas tree lighting on Monday night. The event—which will be featured in a live broadcast on CBS3, with Moorestown’s own Kathy Orr—will also have:

  • An “Elf on the Shelf” reading by Chuck Gill
  • Musical entertainment by the Moorestown High School Madrigals
  • Cookies donated by Wegmans
  • Free hot chocolate offered by Brandywine Senior Living
  • Plenty of free food and drink
The event (free and open to the public, of course) begins at 5:30 p.m. and culminates with the lighting of a 20-foot Norway spruce (the same tree, by the way, used at Rockefeller Center).

Also on Monday night, the township will recognize the efforts of the many volunteers involved in local government at the annual Boards and Committees Dinner. The dinner starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Moorestown Field Club.

Of course, it wouldn't be the holidays in Moorestown without the Lions Club Holiday Parade. The annual event, now in its 53rd year, kicks off at noon Saturday at the corner of Chester and Central avenues. The parade will include performances by string bands, bagpipers, the Moorestown High School Band and the Liberty Band, as well as plenty of marching units and floats.

Following the parade, stop by the Church Street Recreation Center for its grand re-opening—where you'll get a chance to see all the new improvements and upgrades the facility has undergone—as well as the annual MoorArts Holiday Arts Festival (on the third floor), which will showcase K-12 student artwork and photography, and give local singers and musicians a venue to perform seasonal and original musical numbers.
