Thanksgiving Charity, Turkey Trot, Football Highlight Week Ahead

Also, Moorestown town council meets Monday night and members of the Class of '83 celebrate Friday.

In the spirit of the season, let's take a look at the week ahead by considering all that there is to be thankful for over these next few days:

  • CharityMoorestown Home & School will hold its annual Turkey Drive Monday, collecting turkeys and (preferably fresh) pies at three different locations. The donations will be combined with Thanksgiving fixings, collected by students at each school, and distributed to Moorestown families in need, with any extras to Family Services.
  • Local government — Town council meets at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the IT room at Moorestown High School. It looks like a relatively light agenda, with the main item being first reading of an ordinance that adds an annual membership fee for use of the Church Street Rec Center.
  • The arts — Registration for Perkins Center for the Arts winter classes opens Monday. Visit their website to register.
  • No school! — Moorestown students begin their Thanksgiving break with an early dismissal Wednesday. (Students return to class Monday, Dec. 2.)
  • Running for a good cause — Registration for the annual Moorestown Turkey Trot starts at 8:15 a.m. Thanksgiving morning, with the 1-mile fun run starting at 9:15, followed by the 5k at 9:45. The low-key race takes place on the Moorestown High School cross country trails. Proceeds from the race benefit the team. As usual, the race will not be timed—it's just for fun!—but there will be plenty of free food. Speaking of food, MooreKids will be on hand at the event to collect donations of healthy breakfast/snack food items for students who receive free/reduced lunch. Nearly 500 people have already signed up to run. Register online here.
  • Football — The morning after Thanksgiving, instead of hitting the mall, exercise off those turkey-and-stuffing calories by participating in the sixth annual charity flag football tournament at Wesley Bishop Park. Proceeds benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Camden County. Visit the Moorestown Youth Football Association website for more info and to register your team.
  • Catching up with old friendsMoorestown High School's Class of '83 will get together for its 30th reunion Friday night at the Moorestown Field Club. Dinner, drinks, dancing and more are in store. Contact Bill Emerson at wce@emersonpersonnel.com for more information.
  • Thanksgiving — Turkey Day may play second fiddle to Christmas, but there's plenty to love about the holiday: relatively guilt-free overeating; football (see above); and most importantly, time spent with loved ones. So if you're thankful for nothing else, be thankful for that. Happy Thanksgiving!
