The Moorestown Library is offering Lexile help for sixth-graders via a new feature on its website.
If you’re the parent of a sixth-grader at the Upper Elementary School, you have undoubtedly heard of Lexile measures for reading. In fact, you may feel your universe suddenly revolves around Lexile measures, with every waking hour spent trying to find books in your child’s Lexile range. For those not in the know, a Lexile measure is a “piece of information about either an individual's reading ability or the difficulty of a text,” according to Lexile.com. Students’ standardized test scores for reading provide their Lexile range. Books are analyzed by the MetaMetrics company for word frequency and sentence length to determine their Lexile score. Lexile scores provide a starting place for students to find books in a variety of genres that …

Kids who participate in the Moorestown Library's Winter Reading Program have a chance to win prizes—the more they read, the better their chances.
Winter reading is back at the Moorestown Library. For the third year in a row, the Moorestown Library will hold its popular Winter Reading Program for children and teens beginning Friday, Feb. 1. All month long, children and teens can read books, tell a children’s librarian about them, and get a raffle ticket for each book they read. The raffle prizes include gift cards to Barnes & Noble, iTunes, Build-A-Bear and Happy Hippo, so there’s something to entice readers of all ages and interests. The more you read, the better your chances are to win. Children who aren’t yet reading on their own can tell us about books that have been read to them, so even preschoolers can get in on the fun. While just a few lucky readers will walk away with the …

If winter weather puts you in the mood to warm up with a classic movie, now’s the time to join in on a longstanding Moorestown Library tradition—Jack Favorite’s Film Festival. Throughout the year, local stage actor and classic film connoisseur Jack Favorite selects his favorite films and shows them on the big screen in the library meeting room. Jack draws on his considerable knowledge of classic films to enhance each showing with a lively discussion of the film. The films are shown at 7:30 p.m. on the first Monday of every month. All are welcome, and no registration is required. Here’s a look at what Jack has in store for 2013: February 4 — Adventures of Don Juan (U.S., 1948, Technicolor, 110 minutes. Directed by Vincent Sherman. Starring …

If you’re an avid reader interested in discussing books and getting ideas for your next great read, consider coming out for the Moorestown Library’s Book Group tonight at 7. We will discuss Let Us Now Praise Famous Men: Three Tenant Families, by James Agee and Walker Evans. Everyone is welcome, whether or not you’ve read the book. First published in 1941, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men remains a powerful exploration into the lives of society’s most poor and forgotten members. …

The Wish Tree is back at the Moorestown Library—and other locations around town—courtesy of the Women's Club.
It’s a longstanding tradition in Moorestown for the Women’s Club to set up a “Wish Tree” in the library and invite members of the community to help make holiday wishes come true for children in need throughout Burlington County. Once again this season, the library is pleased to display a tree decorated with gift tags that have the name, age and wish of a local child in need of some cheer this holiday season. Anyone interested in helping make a child’s wish come true can simply stop by the library, choose a gift tag, mark the sign-up sheet with your first name and the number of the tag you selected, and bring your unwrapped gift with the tag to the library no later than Saturday, Dec. 15. Many of the wishes are as basic as a stuffed animal …
