Week in Review: Moorestown Teen Hits Jackpot

A Moorestown High School grad wins $1 million on a scratch-off, a Kimberly Drive resident has a scary encounter with a burglar and more this week in Moorestown news.

Two weeks after his lottery-playing grandmother died, a 19-year-old Moorestown High School grad hit the jackpot in the 7-Eleven parking lot.  It was another day of fun, food, arts and crafts, pumpkin-painting and scarecrow-making, plus the unveiling of a touching new monument outside the Community House.  A North Washington Avenue couple were displaced, but safe, after a basement fire tore through their home. Several residents shared horror stories and pleaded with council to help them handle a nuisance home in their neighborhood. Read here to find out what the property owner is doing to help. As if walking in on a burglary wasn't scary enough, this woman was shoved to the ground by the culprit and had a ring ripped right off her finger. …

Photo Gallery: Autumn in Moorestown

Take pictures at the festival? Share them with your neighbors by uploading them here.

Thousands of people once again packed Main Street for a day of arts, crafts, food, entertainment, pumpkin-painting and scarecrow-making for the 19th annual Autumn in Moorestown festival. If you missed it, you missed a heckuva good time, as well as the unveiling of the "Moorestown Memories" monument outside the Community House. Created by former Moorestonian Chad Fisher, the 1,000-pound bronze monument depicts a group of children playing, which is "the best representation of what the Community House’s mission is,” according to board of trustees member Haynes Hendrickson. Fisher donated the monument in part to aid the Community House's capital campaign. Prior to the unveiling, George Schulmann, president of the board of trustees, petitioned …

Autumn in Moorestown Returns

Read on to get the skinny on Moorestown's big fall festival, from the entertainers who will be there to a special unveiling that will highlight the event.

It’s that time of year again. In just four days, Main Street will be jammed with crafters, artists, classic cars and entertainers as far as the eye can see—along with several thousand Moorestonians and their neighbors. The 19th annual Autumn in Moorestown festival will kick off at 9 a.m. Saturday, with nearly 100 arts and crafts vendors and roughly 200 classic cars expected to line Main Street from Church to Chester. Event co-chair Helen Davies-Miramontes said the event usually attracts between 15,000 to 20,000 visitors, making it one of downtown Moorestown’s most popular events, right alongside Moorestown Day. “It’s just an all-around great community event,” she said. “There’s really something there for everyone. There’s arts and crafts …

Monument Immortalizes Link Between Community House, Kids

Sculptor Chad Fisher, a former Moorestonian, is working on a life-size bronze monument that will be unveiled at next month's Autumn in Moorestown festival.

The legacy of the Moorestown Community House is, and will forever be, indelibly linked with children. Moorestown’s youthful residents have crossed its threshold countless times for baby showers, dances, movie nights and swimming lessons, and in recent years, swarmed its front lawn for face painting and Easter egg hunts and scarecrow making. Accomplished sculptor Chad Fisher, a former Moorestown resident, is in the process of immortalizing that legacy with a bronze sculpture, depicting five children holding hands and playing, which will be unveiled at Autumn in Moorestown next month. By his own admission, Fisher has no special connection to the Community House. But he spent several of his formative years here, and maintains a small studio …

Liquor License Opponents, Proponents Take Campaigns to Festival

The two camps broadcast their opposing messages only yards away from each other during Autumn in Moorestown Saturday.

Competing camps in the debate over liquor licenses set up shop just a few feet from each other on Main Street during Saturday’s Autumn in Moorestown festival. Here, you had PREIT (Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust) president Joe Coradino and Jacob DerHagopian, chair of the economic development advisory committee, championing the lifting of Moorestown’s 100-year ban on liquor licenses to establish restaurants serving alcohol at the mall. And then about 100 feet away, tables popped up in a storefront, you had Stanley Ralph and other members of the “no liquor license” crowd, distributing their information and spreading their own message to curious passersby. “To me, it’s not ideological,” Ralph said of the issue, which has seemingly …

Autumn in Moorestown Returns for Its 18th Year

The festival, one of Moorestown's biggest, will take over Main Street Oct. 8.

Now in its 18th year, Autumn in Moorestown has become one of, if not the, biggest events in town all year. Gina Zegel, who co-chairs the festival with Helen Miramontes for the Moorestown Business Association (MBA), said the event regularly attracts 3,000 to 5,000 people from in- and out-of-town in the seven hours it takes over Main Street. It’s little wonder though, given the myriad of diversions the festival offers, from the juried craft show to the car show, live music, face painting and balloon animals for the kids and, of course, the traditional scarecrow making, provided by the Moorestown Fire Department. The fire department provides all the hay, clothes and other tools, letting the children gather on the lawn of the Community House …

Business Association, Jewish Community Clash Over Festival Conflict

Controversy ignited after "Autumn in Moorestown" organizers keep festival on same day as Yom Kippur.

Members of the township’s Jewish community are fuming over the Moorestown Business Association’s (MBA) decision to hold its annual “Autumn in Moorestown” festival on the holiest of Jewish holidays, Yom Kippur. In its 17-year history, Autumn in Moorestown has always been held on the second Saturday in October, according to MBA president Mark Morgan. Yom Kippur, which falls on the 10th day of the Jewish month of Tishrei, floats from year to year. Next year, it will fall on Sept. 26, on Sept. 14 in 2013 and on Oct. 4 in 2014. This year, it’s Saturday, Oct. 8, the same day as the festival. During Yom Kippur, the “Day of Atonement,” it is customary for Jews to spend their whole day in the synagogue, during which many of them fast. Morgan and …

I agree it was a mistake and not an intentional mistake. However, I am confused by one thing in the article, it states Good Friday and Easter are not floating holidays. Yes, they are...Easter (and therefore Good Friday) moves every year.   more ›
