The Quakers suffered their ninth loss of the season Monday night.
Monday night’s game pitted the 4-8 Quakers against a 7-3 Trenton Catholic squad in a Burlington County Scholastic League Liberty Division tilt. The Quakers held an early 10-5 lead in the first quarter before Trenton Catholic took over the game en route to an 85-55 win. “Game plan coming in was doing what we have been doing all year: come out, play hard, try to execute on offense, because we knew they were a very good team and they would probably force us to do things we weren’t supposed to and they did,” head coach Shawn Anstey said. “We had a lot of turnovers tonight.” At the end of the first quarter, the Quakers trailed by four points, but a strong second quarter from Trenton Catholic put the Quakers in a 16-point hole at halftime. Aside…

The Quakers are looking to build on last year's surprise playoff run.
In her fourth year as head coach of the Quakers girls' basketball team, Christine Hill is preaching scoring and discipline to her girls. The team was 13-16 and 3-5 in the division last year. “We have a very tough conference, but what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. I welcome the challenge,” Hill said. “I’m looking forward to the RV (Rancocas Valley). I think that they are going to be our nicest challenge aside from Trenton Catholic. Trenton Catholic is going to be a large mount to overcome, but not insurmountable.” The Quakers installed a new offense last year and Hill said they "barely scratched the surface of it." Refining the offense has been a focus since practice began the Monday after Thanksgiving. “What needs to improve, if …

After a 12-13 season, the boys' basketball team is leaning on its speed—not its height—for success in 2011-2012.
With the graduation of the team’s big men from last year, Moorestown boys' basketball coach Shawn Anstey is hoping the speed of his players will help the team this season. “We are looking a little bit different this year with our speed than with our height," he said. "It is going to be a challenge, but it’s going to be a great experience for these kids to see what’s out there in terms of talent." Anstey is entering his third season as the head coach—after seven years with the JV team—coming off a 12-13 season. The team returns three starting seniors and two new seniors joined the program when practice began after Thanksgiving weekend. “Our main rival is Cinnaminson, even though they are out of our division," Anstey said. "Last year the …

Wizards, Magic, Quaker Shakers make for night of family fun.
The Moorestown Magic—made up of district teachers—took on the Harlem Wizards Saturday and performed admirably, with the win going to the Wizards, 90-70. Of course, that was after the Wizards offered the Magic 5, 10 and even 20 points per basket. It was all in good fun, as the game was as much about shooting baskets as it was trick shots, dance moves and skits. The Home & School Association sold out tickets to the fundraiser, and stands were packed with screaming, cheering fans. A massive cheer went up every time the home team landed a shot—and every time a Wizard soared, flipped or otherwise shot toward the basket. Students brought homemade signs supporting their favorite teachers, and district teachers participated both on the court and …

Moorestown's Emily Filoon scores 15 as the Quakers find a way to hang on against Timber Creek, 57-52.
ERIAL — By the time that Stephanie Toy approached the free-throw line with 5 seconds left, Saturday's game outcome was no longer in doubt for the Quakers. Her two shots were just insurance that there would be no last-second heroics from Timber Creek's Jasmine Martin or any of her teammates. In sinking both of them, Toy put the game out of reach and sent Moorestown to the South Jersey Group 3 Finals as they defeated Timber Creek, 57-52. The Quakers will play at Ocean City at 6 p.m. Monday. It was the Quakers' seventh victory in a row and perhaps their most important of the year, so far. "Never would I have expected this," said Quakers' coach Chris Hill. "They were resilient, they came back, they don't want the season to end and they are …
