The Moorestown girls soccer came up short in the state final against Northern Highlands—but these girls have nothing to be ashamed of, their coach said.
For the second year in a row, Moorestown girls soccer fell short of the state title by two goals against Northern Highlands. But no one's going to say they didn't give it their all. “The effort was unbelievable as far as I was concerned,” coach Bill Mulvihill said of Sunday’s game. “(Northern Highlands) is one of the best girls soccer teams I’ve ever played … We probably played that team harder than anyone has the last two years.” After going up 1-0 off a goal by Marie McCool toward the end of the first half, Moorestown (17-5-1) gave up three straight goals in the second to the Highlanders. The Moorestown girls soccer team (17-4-1) will play Northern Highlands (23-0) for the championship for the second year in row—but coach Bill Mulvihill wouldn't have it any other way.
Heading into this weekend’s state championship game, Moorestown girls soccer coach Bill Mulvihill is exactly where he wants to be. His team is peaking at the right time and he’s facing an opponent he and his girls know very well. “If someone had told me at the beginning of the year we’d be back in the final again, I’d have wanted to play Northern Highlands,” said Mulvihill, recalling the strong performance the Quakers had against Northern Highlands in last year’s Group 3 championship—a game that went scoreless until the final 7 minutes thanks to the Quakers’ suffocating defense. Following a 13th division title win last season, Moorestown head coach Bill Mulvihill was inducted into the New Jersey Scholastic Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
After eight years coaching college men’s soccer, Bill Mulvihill had to tweak his somewhat gruff, in-your-face leadership style when he took a job coaching Moorestown’s girls’ team. “It was a little bit of an adjustment for me,” he recalled. “I pretty much coached with the same intensity, but the demeanor had to change a little bit. But it was still sort of a tough love kind of thing.” Apparently, “tough love” works. His first year coaching Moorestown girls’ soccer—15 years ago—the team made it to the semis of the South Jersey final and over the course of the last 14 years has captured 13 division titles, making it all the way to the state Group 3 Championship final last year.
