School Resource Officer Controversy, Tax Reassessment Fight: Only in Moorestown

Our columnist gives her take on a busy week in Moorestown news, from the SRO issue to a reassessment battle over the town's (and the state's) largest home.

Even though I love my job at the library, I am always happy when Friday comes and goes, leaving me with several days of less structure and more junk food. And how delightful to wake up on Saturday morning to a blanket of snow! Who doesn’t love a good "snow event"? I was almost envious, texting with my younger son who is hiding out in his dorm room in Boston. Two feet of snow is an invitation to partake in Hot Pockets and sloth—two of his favorite things! After spending three years in Southern California, we moved back to New Jersey in 1994, specifically to East Oak Avenue, where we rented a home recently vacated by Mitch “Wild Thing” Williams. We had missed the ice storms that plagued Moorestown for several winters, but were there for the …

Marsia, I signed the on-line petition and then went to work. Does that upset anyone? I wanted the officer to stay because he knows the kids... Groups... Clicks.... And trouble spots. I am comfortable with his experience and knowledge. Since the police department gave us no true reason for replacement, I want an officer who "knows his beat" and my kid. As far as the Hill go... I should be so lucky…   more ›

School Cop Will Stay Put 'For Now,' Town Manager Says

Town manager Scott Carew said School Resource Officer Bryan Wright won't be replaced while a new shared services agreement between the district and township is crafted.

The township has put on hold plans to replace School Resource Officer (SRO) Bryan Wright, while it crafts a new shared services agreement with the school district, township manager Scott Carew said Friday. Controversy has swirled all week around the police department’s decision to replace Wright, who has served as SRO for 13 years, with Officer Don Brauckmann. Residents responded by starting a petition—which currently has more than 1,300 signatures—and launching social media campaigns to broadcast their support for Wright. However, Carew said the public outcry over the issue didn’t play into his decision to “hit the reset button.” In researching the matter, Carew discovered the shared services agreement between the district and the …

School Cop Replacement Upsets Residents

More than 1,000 people have expressed their support for School Resource Officer Bryan Wright after it was revealed he would be replaced in September, including the board of education.

Moorestown residents are upset after learning the police department plans to replace long-tenured School Resource Officer (SRO) Bryan Wright with a different officer at the beginning of next school year.   Wright, who is stationed at the high school but covers the entire district, has been the Moorestown School District SRO for 13 years. The current plan, according to Lt. Lee Lieber, the department’s public information officer, is for Wright to be replaced by Ptl. Don Brauckmann in September.   Lieber explained the decision is not a critique of the job Wright has done at the school district—“Bryan’s done a fine job out there”—but rather the normal course of business within the department, and a chance for Wright to advance his career. “You…
