MFS Three-Peats as Regional Consumer Bowl Champs

Moorestown Friends School now advances to the state finals in Trenton to compete against the North and Central regional winners.

After another superb performance in the Consumer Bowl, Moorestown Friends School (MFS) will compete in the state finals once again. Moorestown Friends won the 17th annual Southern Regional Consumer Bowl Competition at Burlington County College last Thursday, April 18. The Burlington County representative, Moorestown Friends finished over Cedar Creek High School from Atlantic County.  This is the third straight year the Friends School has advanced to the finals as winners of the South Jersey region. “The team has worked extremely hard to succeed in the county and regional Consumer Bowl competitions," said Barbara Kreider, MFS Science Department chair and Consumer Bowl advisor. Church Road Project Begins This Week

If you're driving through Mount Laurel or Maple Shade this week (or next), adjust your travel plans accordingly.

Starting Wednesday, the county will begin resurfacing a 1.6-mile section of Church Road spanning Maple Shade and Mount Laurel. The project involves milling and overlay of Church Road from the Camden County line in Maple Shade to Route 73 in Mount Laurel. The work is expected to take about two weeks to complete. One lane will remain open to traffic, alternating during milling and paving operations. Motorists may experience delays and are encouraged to find alternative routes while work is underway, according to a release from the county. The work is being done as part of the county’s 2012 state-funded overlay program. The county will resurface a total of 21.4 miles of roadway in 14 municipalities through shared state and county funding. …

The Burlington County Sheriff's Department has a program for you—and your kids—this weekend.

Anxious because your teenage son or daughter is about to get their driver’s license? The Burlington County Sheriff’s Department can help. Sheriff Jean E. Stanfield will hold a free presentation this weekend designed to reduce teen driver crashes by increasing parental involvement. The program, called "Share the Keys," will be held from 12:30-2 p.m. Saturday, at the Emergency Services Training Center, 53 Academy Drive, Westampton. "Share the Keys" is structured for parents and teen drivers in the pre-permit/permit stage of licensure. County Giving Away Gun Locks at Moorestown Mall

The county will also be offering free gun locks at every branch of the Burlington County Library system.

After last week’s tragic shooting in Connecticut underscored the importance of storing firearms safely, Burlington County is offering free gun locks at multiple locations today, including the Moorestown Mall. “Whether you are a gun owner or not, everyone can agree that firearm safety is paramount,” said Sheriff Jean Stanfield. “Gun locks are a simple way of adding a layer of security against gun-related injuries and deaths.” She said her department has several hundred locks, which were made available through Project ChildSafe, a program developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation and supported by a U.S. Department of Justice grant.      Stanfield said the locks—which can be used to disarm pistols, revolvers, rifles and shotguns—…

County Honors Fallen at Wreaths Across America Ceremony

More than 500 wreaths were donated by private sponsors to decorate the gravestones of veterans at Beverly National Cemetery.

Burlington County Freeholder Deputy Director Joseph B. Donnelly gave a solemn address Saturday to a crowd of several hundred who gathered at Beverly National Cemetery in Edgewater Park for the annual Wreaths Across America remembrance ceremony. Donnelly asked for a moment of silence to remember those who died Friday in the Newtown, CT shooting before thanking those in attendance for taking the time to honor those buried American veterans whose families and friends are no longer able to decorate their graves during the Christmas season. “Today, we are that family member, for we all belong to the same family whose first name is ‘proud’ and whose last name is ‘American,’’’ Donnelly said. The Burlington County clerk has made it simpler for voters to get answers to some basic election questions. (Figuring out who to vote for is still on you though.)

Don’t know where to vote? Not sure whether you’re even registered to vote? The Burlington County clerk has answers. “With less than 60 days until the election and the conclusion of both party conventions, our call volume has shown a clear increase,” said County Clerk Timothy Tyler. “Residents are calling for basic information and new website links have been added to help them find that information.” The office has added a link to allow voters to be sure they are registered to vote in a few simple steps. The “Check Voter Registration” link will allow a resident to search the state’s voter registration database by entering just their name and date of birth. County Seeking Volunteers for Cleanup at Boundary Creek

Don't mind getting your hands (or gloves) dirty? Come out Tuesday for a park cleanup at Boundary Creek Park in Moorestown.

Burlington County freeholders are seeking volunteers to help the Clean Communities Office and Eastern Mountain Sports with a park cleanup next Tuesday at Boundary Creek Park in Moorestown. “Our county residents have really stepped up to help us keep our parks clean,” said Freeholder Director Bruce Garganio. “We really appreciate all their efforts. It is great to see folks working together to keep our community green.” Volunteers are encouraged to wear long pants, long sleeves, long socks and sturdy close-toed shoes that can get muddy. The cleanup will focus on the removal of invasive honeysuckle plants in grassy areas where insects are present, so volunteers may wish to use insect repellent as well. Freeholders to Recognize Photo Contest Winners

The Burlington County Freeholders will award the winners at their regular meeting on Wednesday.

Burlington County Freeholders will officially recognize the winners of the annual Environmental Health Photo Contest at Wednesday’s freeholder meeting. More than 70 entries were received, out of which seven winners were chosen, primarily in age categories. All the photos were displayed and judged by the public at the Earth Fair on June 24. “We congratulate the winners and all the residents who submitted entries in the contest designed to raise awareness of everyone’s impact on the environment,” said Freeholder Mary Ann O’Brien. “You can’t help but be impressed by the variety of images, not to mention the large number of entries from young people.” The winners will be presented certificates at the freeholder meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday in …

County Offers Help for Job Seekers, Employers

Burlington County's new website gives residents and local businesses alike the tools they need to succeed in today's economy.

Looking for employment or employees? Burlington County has a new tool to help with both. The county launched its new “Business and Job Seekers Services” website last week, designed to help county residents and local businesses find employment, job training or hire qualified staff. The new site, which can be accessed at www.co.burlington.nj.us/employment, asks visitors to pick a path: either as a job seeker or as a business in search of employees. These two specific paths lead to valuable employment information. Local businesses can learn how the county can help find and train qualified workers, review hard-to-fill positions, determine competitive salaries, and write effective job postings.
