Local Doll Store Relying on Niche Market to Thrive

Eleanor and Wendy McGhee, well-educated in the art of doll collecting, have opened Dolls, Bears & Gifts in The Shoppes at Cinnaminson.

Starting a business can be a chancy endeavor. But opening one selling dolls and accessories can be daring in an economy that's still struggling.  Along a row of storefronts in the increasingly established plaza, The Shoppes at Cinnaminson, Eleanor McGhee and her daughter Wendy McGhee, both of Beverly, have confidence their new store, Dolls, Teddy Bears & Gifts, will thrive among a small but loyal following of collectors, hobbyists and, of course, little girls. At the McGhee’s store, shelves are lined with dolls bearing cherubic faces, pinched noses and bright eyes.   “There is something about a doll’s face that draws you in, or reminds you of your childhood,” says Eleanor, 69, a woman wih a gentle voice, who became a doll aficionado after …

Salty Paws Photography: Picture-Perfect Pets

Cinnaminson resident Janice Smith is a photographer specializing in pet portraits.

When it comes to Janice Smith's stint as a photographer, you might say it’s gone to the dogs. At 8 a.m. on a Saturday morning at Amico Island Park in Delran, Smith, of Salty Paws Photography, was dressed comfortably wearing brown boots, carrying a pink bag packed with her Nikon D7000 camera, two squeaky toys, a whistle and several crackers. Beneath a gorgeous blue sky, the Delaware River was as quiet as a smile, and the autumn sun was casting low beams of light. Smith was ready. The purpose of her day: portrait sitting for three dogs. Parents of the humankind have treasured images of their offspring for generations. Now, dog owners will go to the same lengths and expense to have a keepsake of Fido. Stephanie Cooper, of Voorhees, had …

Local Interior Designer Can Turn Your Home Into a Haven

Interior designer Susan Hopkins is making a name for herself and her artistry.

By the time Susan Hopkins unveils her drawing boards, she’s gotten to know her client like a family member. She can easily say if chartreuse or purple is a favorite color, if the dogs sleep on the couch, or if entertaining is a priority.  When Amy Minnich and her husband were building their 5,000-square-foot home in Collegeville, PA, a couple years ago, the couple hired Hopkins to redo the family room, breakfast area and kitchen. “I had three small children at the time, and I had trouble just getting out the door, let alone redecorating,” says Minnich, 40. “Working with Susan was a great partnership.” Pamela Willmoth, 49, who hired Hopkins to redesign her one-bedroom condo in Philadelphia, agrees. “I totally relied on her for space …

The restaurant will feature half-priced specials and live music from 6 to 10 p.m.

SweetWater Bar & Grill, the newest Cinnaminson hotspot from the Kyrtatas family of Hathaway’s, will hold its grand opening celebration tonight. “Every day seems to be picking up a little more,” said George Kyrtatas, co-owner and head chef. “The response has been tremendous.” The restaurant officially opened Sept. 23, and tonight it will feature specials and live music for its grand opening. From 6 to 10 p.m., all appetizers, draft beer and glasses of wine will be half-price. South Jersey party band Six Pack Poets will perform live. “We’re really hoping it’s going to be a good crowd,” Kyrtatas said. Bayard's Chocolate House Stands the Test of Time

Started by James Bayard Kelly ll, Bayard’s Chocolates has been a landmark in South Jersey for ages.

The rush of midday traffic roars incessantly on Route 130 northbound with startling force past Bayard’s Chocolates, which has been doling out candy since 1960, when gas averaged 25¢ a gallon. During these summer days, the outdoor double swing sits empty. But it’s just a matter of time before a festive character will be waving to passing motorists and beckoning customers inside, where generation after generation have patronized this century-old colonial structure. The story of Bayard’s is the stuff of folklore. According to news accounts, the institution was founded by South Jersey native James Bayard Kelly ll in 1939, after Kelly realized his hobby at making candy was pretty good and had become local favorites. His confection business then…

Gym Rats Need Not Join

John Johnson, at EverFit Physical Therapy, helps clients maintain strong bodies and stay in shape, without the musclehead mentality of some health club facilities.

Working as a physical therapist for the last 30 years has taught John Johnson many aspects about human nature and the bodies we covet: There is a whole population of folks who want to be healthy, but they don’t necessarily know the best ways to go about it. Johnson runs EverFit Physical Therapy and Fitness Center in the industrial center on Wallace Boulevard in Cinnaminson. Past the lobby is a mirrored exercise room with an array of conditioning equipment found in modern health club facilities—weight machines, treadmills and stationary bikes.  But in another room is the rehabilitation room, an environment designed to offer specialized programs by Johnson and his skilled staff of physical therapists for patients recovering from orthopedic …

Brother's Pizza Co-Owner to Open Second Restaurant

Owner Nick Scotto will fire up an expanded menu in his new restaurant later this month.

When Cinnaminson's Acme market closed in February 2011, Nick Scotto says he was a bit worried. And for good reason. Through Acme’s front doors, hundreds of daily grocery shoppers ambled in to buy bananas, hamburgers or milk on their way to work, school or home, and passed right by Scotto’s restaurant, Brother’s Pizza, a familiar fixture since 1978.  And then the foot traffic stopped. But because of a loyal following—not to mention some of the best pizza in the region—Scotto was able to weather some rough sailing over the last year.  Scotto hails residents: “My local customers stayed with me, even after the Acme closed. That means a lot." Taking stock of the last 34 years, Scotto says because of his dedicated patrons, he’s decided to open …

With Scented Shampoo in a Sudsy Bath, It's a Dog's Life

Tim Kenney’s mobile pet grooming business pampers the furry member of the family.

The white vans are a familiar sight crawling through neighborhoods in South Jersey displaying the blue-and-black-lettered name Bathing Beauties Mobile Pet Grooming, as they make their way to appointments to primp, shampoo and fluff Fifi or Fido. Inside the van, each pooch is pampered in a hydro-jet bath, blow-dried with an air-fluff dispenser, and given the equivalent of a canine manicure. Then man's best friend is returned to its owner smelling as fresh as a flower on a spring day, and looking as pristine as a doggy contestant for the Westminster Kennel Club. Owner Tim Kenney entered the mobile animal bathing business after holding jobs as a circulation district manager at different times for the Burlington County Times and The …

I highly recommend Bathing Beauties. They do a great job on Sam and Lily and it is not at all stressful for them. Katie comes monthly to our house and does and excellent job bathing and grooming both dogs (who are Golden Retrievers with very dense coats). We have nothing but positive comments to make about this business.   more ›

Local Garden Center Blooms with Success

The Schlupps of Cinnaminson Nurseries have been growing plants for more than half a century, along with reaping joys of their flourishing family.

On a glorious afternoon of sunshine, Vicki Schlupp excused herself from the workplace of her family business, Cinnaminson Nurseries, to say goodbye to her grandchildren and daughter, Bonnie, who were returning home to Virginia after a relaxing, fun-filled week at the Schlupps' home. Outside on the six-acre grounds of the nursery, a group of intrepid workers were watering shrubs and rearranging planters with the immediate focus on one looming reality: The garden center must be in tiptop shape for another busy spring season when a multitude of customers descend on the well-known farmstead. “Family has always been very important to us,” Vicki reflects. “Soon we will be quite busy, and there will be little time for much else.” In fact, those …
