Balancing Girls with Fun Exercises

With Balanced Athletics, Cindy O'Donnell runs camps and sessions for girls who want to have fun while learning athletic skills.

Back when she was in high school, Cindy O’Donnell, an energetic former athlete, worked as a camp counselor for kids aged 6 through 13 at the JCC Camp in Medford. And she began to notice a disturbing trend: The very athletic boys overshadowed the other kids. And in particular, she noticed the more timid girls would put little effort into playing sports under these circumstances. Those early observations resonated with O’Donnell, now a mother of three teenage daughters (11, 15, 18). So with a wealth of experience under her belt, O’Donnell turned her findings into a business, Balanced Athletics, featuring fun fitness classes and camps for elementary-aged girls to strengthen their athletic prowess, with the cornerstone being to boost their …

Field Hockey Falls One Win Shy of State Title

Head Coach Ali Collins and sports editor Jim Vassallo break down the field hockey season.

Record: 15-6-1 Graduating seniors: Paige Macrae, Cally Dougherty, Elizabeth Johnson, Katie Monaghan, Laura Hyder, Alex Loftus, Emily Cooper and Olivia Langerhans. Overall impressions of the season: This season was an undeniable success. I am so proud of the 2011 MHSFH team for overcoming so many obstacles on the way to defeating Wall, winning a Group 3 Central Title, and advancing over Kingsway to the State Finals. I am excited because this season's successes pave the way for our continued success next season.  The team’s unsung hero: Katie Monaghan was our unsung hero both on and off the field. She spent much of the season injured (in the beginning of the year, recovering from stress fractures in her spine, and in the middle of the season…

Moorestown Field Hockey’s Magical Run Comes to an End

Moorestown's field hockey coach praises her squad as the team ends its season with a 5-1 loss to Freehold Borough.

Moorestown field hockey plays one of the toughest schedules in South Jersey each season and the tough schedule paid off as the Quakers advanced to the Group 3 State Championship game on Sunday at Toms River East against Freehold Borough. The Quakers fell by a score of 5-1, ending their magical run in the playoffs. “We had a lot of ups and downs, but I can say that this is the team I’ve seen the most growth in since I’ve been coaching,” head coach Ali Collins said. “We played a tough schedule this year. "We’ve had tough opponents and every single test that we went against in Eastern, Washington Township, Shawnee, Haddonfield and Wall, every game we improved and every game we learned from.” The game was scoreless through the majority of the …

Field Hockey Takes Down Kingsway, Advances to State Title Game

A dominating performance capped by goals from Kendall Coughlin and Jess Dadino sends the Quakers to the Group 3 state title game.

Coming off their first Central Jersey Group 3 title since 2007, there was nothing that could have stopped Moorestown field hockey's momentum in Thursday's state semifinal game, not even the Kingsway Dragons, who had won the South Jersey Group 3 title in dramatic fashion as well. The Quakers (15-5-1) dominated the game for a full 60 minutes, holding the Dragons (18-5-0) without a shot in the first half and getting goals from Kendall Coughlin and Jess Dadino to earn a 2-0 win and a shot at the state title. “We're bringing the tradition back,” said senior Mary Flick. “We're really psyched to bring it back and everyone has a good feeling about Sunday.” The Quakers took a while to get on the scoreboard, as they struggled to take advantage of …

Field Hockey Wins Double OT Thriller Against Wall to Claim Title

The Quakers defeated Wall 3-2 to win the Central Group 3 Title and will face Kingsway in state semifinal on Thursday (2 p.m.).

For three straight years, Moorestown and Wall have met in the sectional finals, and for three straight years, Wall has won. The Quakers traveled to Wall on Tuesday afternoon looking to change their luck against the Crimson Knights. It took all of regulation, one full overtime period, and roughly six minutes of a second overtime, but Moorestown (14-5-1) was able to defeat their fiercest rival. A 3-2 win over Wall (14-3-2) keeps Moorestown’s season going, with a game scheduled against South Jersey, Group 3 Champion Kingsway on Thursday in a State Group 3 Semifinal. “Wall is an outstanding program, they’re so well-coached, and they are fast and aggressive," said head coach Ali Collins. "We really had to be aggressive the entire game. I’m not …

Field Hockey Opens Playoffs with Shutout Win

The Quakers advance to round three of the NJSIAA Central, Group 3 Tournament with their 7-0 win over Jackson Liberty.

Coming off a bye week in the opening round of the NJSIAA Central, Group 3 Tournament, the Quakers were looking to make a statement against Jackson Liberty Thursday. They did by scoring early and often en route to a 7-0 win in round two. “It means a lot (having the bye) because it gives us an extra day of practice. The more we get the ball on our sticks without competition, it’s more practice to look up for the big games of the playoffs,” Mary Flick said. Despite having eight seniors on this year’s squad, head coach Ali Collins still believes this is a young team, especially with the number of seniors (16) lost to graduation last year. Goalkeeper Laya Mallela didn't have much work to do for Moorestown (12-5-1), as the Quakers spent most of …

Moravian field hockey player Catherine Duffin helped her team to a 9-8 record this season and a 2-4 mark in the Landmark Conference. Duffin is tied for second on the team with six goals and 15 points. Duffin and Moorestown Patch sports editor Jim Vassallo took time to chat about Moravian, what she misses most about Moorestown, and the transition to college in this week’s Alumni Profile. Moorestown Patch: What is your major? Catherine Duffin: Nursing. Patch: What stood out about Moravian? Duffin: It has a beautiful small campus, a great nursing program, and a good field hockey program. Patch: Do you play any other sports?
