Local Cops Pay Touching Tribute to Fallen Brethren

'It gives me comfort knowing they'll always remember,' says the son of a Moorestown officer killed in the line of duty.

Roughly 100 local police officers stopped by Frank Fullerton Memorial Park in Moorestown Thursday to pay tribute to their fallen brethren as part of the first leg of a journey that will take them to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. The Police Unity Tour—a 200-mile bike ride to the D.C. memorial that raises awareness and money for fallen police officers and their families—doesn't officially begin until Friday, but officers from several nearby departments took part in their own mini tour of local memorials Thursday morning. Members of the Fullerton family, including his son, Frank Jr., were in attendance and were recognized for the fallen officer's sacrifice. Frank Fullerton was killed in the line of duty in…

Officers to Visit Local Memorials Ahead of Police Unity Tour

Police officers from Moorestown and neighboring departments will stop at memorials in the area Thursday, including Fullerton Park, before they begin the main leg of the annual Police Unity Tour.

Before they join hundreds of other law enforcement officials on the Police Unity Tour to Washington, D.C. Thursday, local police officers will do their own tour of local memorials to pay tribute to their fallen brethren. Each year, officers from Moorestown and neighboring departments take part in the Unity Tour, a 200-mile bike ride to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in D.C. that raises awareness and money for fallen police officers and their families. The first Unity Tour—the motto of which is, "We Ride For Those Who Died"—began in Florham Park, NJ with only 18 officers in 1997. Last year, approximately 1,600 officers made the ride to D.C. Sgt. Richard Gunning was the first Moorestown officer to participate, in 2007. In …

Readers' Choice: Moorestown's Favorite Park/Playground

This week, tell us where you plan to spend your time outdoors this spring.

With winter solidly in the rear-view (spring begins Tuesday), it's officially time to get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather.  So in the spirit of the season, we want to know your favorite park or playground for our fourth Readers' Choice poll. Do you prefer the newly remodeled Fullerton Park/Playground, the athletic complexes at Wesley Bishop, or maybe the wildlife viewing opportunities at Boundary Creek Natural Resource Area? The sledding at Stokes Hill? We've done our best to include just about every outdoor area in Moorestown, but if we left a good one off the list, tell us in the comments and we’ll add it. The following parks are included in the poll: Wesley Bishop Park Frank Fullerton Memorial Park/Playground Moorestown Memorial…

Letters to the Editor

Letter to the Editor: Mayor Button Looks Back, Looks Ahead

The township made significant strides in 2011, the mayor writes, including the demolition of town hall and the rejuvenation of Fullerton Park, as well as holding the line on taxes.

As we approach the end of another year, I’d like to share some thoughts with you on issues of importance to our township. Let me begin by welcoming our new township manager, Scott Carew, who comes to us with a strong pedigree in municipal management and a track record of strong leadership, fiscal responsibility, effective problem solving and a true passion for his job. Scott, his wife Susanna and their children, Jason and Rebecca, are residents of Moorestown (a bonus indeed!). We utilize the “council-manager” form of government in our town. In this organizational model, council acts as the legislative body (similar, in many ways, to a board of directors), representing the citizens in establishing policy, implementing legislation, approving…

The self-congratulatory "letter" Mr. Button wrote is laughable. Decisions are not made for the benefit of everyone in Moorestown and everyone knows that. My advice, Mr. Mayor, is that you try and accomplish something significant before you toot your own kazoo. The best that can be said for your tenure is that the township hasn't completely fallen into disarray. Yet. Stop bragging.   more ›

Under the Radar

Giving Thanks

Family, friends, a great town and adoring readers. What are you thankful for?

In the mighty world of merchandising, Thanksgiving is just an unfortunate speed bump on the retail road between two very profitable holidays: Halloween and Christmas. In most temples of retail, the Christmas decorations are hauled out as soon as the costumes and leftover skeletons get schlepped back into storerooms, but it’s not until Thanksgiving that the full onslaught of Christmas overkill begins. Any moment now, we can expect the coming of the Christmas inflatables. But I ask you: Are there no Thanksgiving inflatables out there? No pilgrims humbled by famine? No huge turkeys? Or what about a nice, silvery six-foot alewife to decorate your lawn? Honestly, I am somewhat relieved the Thanksgiving inflatable-thing has not caught on. It’s…
