Girls’ Volleyball Finishes 20-Win Season with Sectional Finals Appearance

A 20-9 record and an appearance in the sectional finals has the Quakers looking toward a bright future.

The Quakers graduated a handful of starters from the 2010 team, so the coaching staff planned on finding out early this season what type of players they had at the varsity level. It didn't take long, with the Quakers winning their first five games before losing to Cherokee. Moorestown finished with a 20-9 record and an appearance in the South, Group 3 Tournament. The Quakers lost in the sectional finals to West Windsor-Plainsboro South 2-1 to end the season. Head coach Scott Atkinson said the seniors on this year’s squad helped lead the Quakers to a deep playoff run with their leadership, hard work, and dedication to the team. “This group had a strong desire to do well, to represent themselves well, and I think they did,” Atkinson said. Girls’ Volleyball Continues Playoff Run with Hard-Fought Victory

The Quakers overcame Monroe in a back-and-forth match and will face West Windsor South in the finals Thursday (7 p.m.) at West Orange.

Moorestown girls’ volleyball came into Monday afternoon’s South, Group 3 semifinal game against Monroe without Anna Allende (out with an illness), knowing they would need to fight through adversity to advance to the Group Championship. “We were able to look back at the tough matches that we dropped (Cherokee, Eastern), where we felt if we put two or three points together we would have been successful in those matches," head coach Scott Atkinson said. "We were able today to limit our errors in games two and three and use our experience." The Quakers fell in game one against Monroe, 22-25, but rebounded to take games two and three by scores of 25-20 and 25-21 to advance to the Group Finals against West Windsor South on Thursday. The game …

Girls’ Volleyball Advances to Third Round of Playoffs

It took three games, but the Quakers knocked off West Windsor North to advance.

Some coaches enjoy having a bye week in the first round of the playoffs; others don't like the long layoff in between games. Add Moorestown girls' volleyball coach Scott Atkinson to the list of coaches who relish an opening round bye. Atkinson and his coaching staff took advantage of the bye week to run practice and scout their second round opponent, West Windsor North (9-10). “We had been struggling for 10 days now, just fighting each other," he said. "We couldn’t get comfortable with one another. We had been playing, playing, playing and hadn’t had practice. That time helped." The advanced scouting report on West Windsor North helped Moorestown (18-8) defeat the Knights 2-1 on Thursday evening at the Moorestown Athletic Center (MAC). …

Quakers Alumni Profile: Christy Velott

Christy Velott has led the Richard Stockton College girls' volleyball team to a 23-8 overall record and a 7-0 mark in the NJAC to start the season.

Moorestown’s girls’ volleyball team is one of the most successful and well-respected programs in South Jersey. There are only two players in the program’s history that have been on the court for 100 wins and one of them was current Stockton star Christy Velott. Velott and Moorestown Patch sports editor Jim Vassallo spoke about her time at Moorestown, the impact the coaching staff had on her career, being named NJAC Rookie of the Year and much more in this week’s edition of Quakers Alumni Profile. Moorestown Patch: What is your major? Christy Velott: I'm a history major. I plan to go to graduate school and get my master's in education. Patch: What stood out about Stockton? Velott: I fell in love with Stockton as soon as I drove onto the …
