Fill Your Bowl and Your Soul at MHS Fundraiser

The high school Interact Club will host its annual 'Soup for the Soul' fundraiser this weekend.

For the 13th year in a row, Moorestown High School's Interact Club will host "Soup for the Soul" at First Presbyterian Church.  The event, scheduled for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, will benefit Philabundance, one of the region's largest food banks and hunger relief organizations.  Event co-chair Shannon Keeler said she and her classmates are hoping to outdo last year's Soup for the Soul, which raised $2,000 for the Food Bank of South Jersey.  "Every person that comes can make a difference," said Keeler, "because there's a lot of hungry people ... We've worked hard. I hope we're able to donate a lot to Philabundance." A ticket—$9 for adults, $6 for kids—gets you a refillable soup bowl and bread, as well as desserts and refreshments. There'…

Moorestown Lives Civilly

Spend a Little, Help a Lot

The Interact Club's Soup for the Soul fundraiser is an example of how Moorestonians—and others—are living civilly.

Many Patch readers may have heard of the Moorestown High School Interact Club and its annual event, Soup for the Soul. This was my family’s second year attending the event and I noticed a couple of things. It’s not just a cool event to attend and be involved in, but it really made me consider what the event is about. It’s not just about eating delicious soup and chatting with the folks there—it’s about how each person who participated helped someone less fortunate. Here is why I think Soup for the Soul was such a great thing to participate in and how everyone involved is “living civilly.” Soup for the Soul raises money for the Food Bank of South Jersey, which is located in Pennsauken, and helps a lot of people. Each person who participated…

Soup for the Moorestown Soul

The Interact Club's annual Soup for the Soul event—held Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church—raised $3,500 last year for the Food Bank of South Jersey.

It may not be what you’d call “soup weather,” but the annual Soup for the Soul event—run by Moorestown High School’s Interact Club—is more about warming the heart than the body. The event, now in its 12th year, raises money for the Food Bank of South Jersey by offering bottomless bowls of soup, prepared by local restaurants and families, to the community. High school junior Katie Dee, advertising chair for Interact’s Soup for the Soul committee, said the fundraiser has become something of a brand in Moorestown, so she’s not worried about unseasonably warm temperatures discouraging people from attending Saturday. “I don’t think the weather is going to affect turnout,” she said, “cause it’s not just New England clam chowder we’re serving. It…

Photo Gallery: Celebrating MLK Day

Different groups across Moorestown recognized the late Civil Rights leader's birthday with service projects Monday.

A blood drive, birthday bags for charity, and blankets and stuffed animals for hospitalized children were just a few of the ways the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday was marked in Moorestown Monday. Moorestown Patch captured some of the images of the day at various locations, including Moorestown Friends School and Trinity Episcopal Church.

Plenty of Ways to Give Back on MLK Day

Local groups will be holding charitable events around Moorestown Monday to honor the late civil rights leader. Did we miss one? Let us know.

Moorestonians who want to honor the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by helping their fellow citizens will have plenty of ways to do it Monday. For the third year in a row, the Moorestown Ministerium will sponsor a service project at Trinity Episcopal Church, in which children put together “birthday boxes” for Catholic Charities, a nonprofit social services organization. The boxes contain festive items like cake mix, frosting, candles, plates, napkins and small gifts—provided by the children—and are distributed by Catholic Charities to its less fortunate clients for birthday celebrations (be it theirs or a loved one’s) at its site in Delanco, said the Rev. Ingrid Wengert, moderator for the Ministerium. Wengert said the activity is open…

Interact Club Holds Blood Drive

Community helps save lives.

The Moorestown High School Interact Club held its spring blood drive May 20, attracting more than 100 donors, including 90 students. The club holds four blood drives each year—a winter drive in November, a Martin Luther King Day drive, a spring drive in May and a summer drive in June. Brianna Defoe, who helped run the event, says there are opportunities to donate blood beyond the school's annual drives. To find a blood drive, visit americanredcross.org and type in your area code. Requirements to donate blood are also on the website. "I find that those who do come are repeat donors who have been donating for many years," said Barbara Gelli, head of the blood drive. "One donation can save two lives or more.” Proof of Gelli’s statement was …

Soup for the Soul Another Success

Event raises money, and awareness of the Food Bank of South Jersey.

Soup for the Soul co-chairs Delaney Honeyford and Danielle Lazarus looked around the packed multipurpose room at the First Presbyterian Church Saturday afternoon, taking a short break during an event they had been planning since November. “I like right before the event starts,” said Lazarus, “when it all comes together.” “I like when the event is running,” Honeyford said, “and I can see the people enjoying it.” And it all came together Saturday with 300 people enjoying soup and bread from area restaurants and raising $3,500 for the Food Bank of South Jersey. The event, now in its 11th year, is run by the Moorestown High School Interact Club. This year’s restaurants included Bacio, Friendly’s, Moorestown Deli, Healthy Garden, Moores Town …

Warm Up with Soup for the Soul

The annual event will be held Saturday with proceeds benefiting the Food Bank of South Jersey.

The Moorestown Interact Club will sponsor Soup for the Soul Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church. Soup for the Soul offers all-you-can-eat soup and bread that has been donated by local restaurants. Dessert will also be provided. All proceeds benefit the Food Bank of South Jersey. The event has raised more than $5,000 in past years, according to Julia Ranson, MHS teacher and adult coordinator of the event. “Paying $9 to eat all you want, you really cannot go wrong.” “During this cold time of the year, what could be a better way to warm up then by enjoying a steamy bowl of soup with members of your community, while also supporting a good cause?” said Sarah Lowy, MHS student and advertising chair for the event. “This is a good cause …
