To the editor: During his life, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. fought for a society rooted in equality, opportunity and justice for all. His vision for America was one of unity, without division by race, religion, social status or gender. Today, as our nation honors the life and legacy of Dr. King, we are proud to be serving as elected officials of a town that remains on the front lines of continuing his work. Every day, Moorestonians from all walks of life find ways to give back to the town we love. Whether it’s coaching a sports team or educating our children, caring for our open spaces or protecting our town’s historical treasures, our town is full of citizens who carry on the efforts of Dr. King through service. Today, we urge all …

Students and staff at Moorestown High School honored the late civil rights leader for the 44th year in a row Friday.
Moorestown wasn’t the scene of any significant milestones or speeches in the Civil Rights Movement, and yet as it approaches Martin Luther King Jr. Day, it holds a very unique distinction. According to staff at Moorestown High School, the school was one of—if not the—first in the country to honor the late Dr. King with an assembly in the wake of his assassination. Linda Dickason, who teaches advanced placement government and politics, has helped organize the assembly since 1985, when she became an advisor to the student association, or student government. But it was the students who first came up with the idea back in 1969—months after King’s assassination in April 1968—of holding an assembly around the civil rights leader’s Jan. 15 …

Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Everybody can be great … because anybody can serve.” If you’re anybody in Moorestown, you have a few ways to serve over the long weekend, stretching into the late civil rights leader’s birthday holiday on Monday. Here’s how you can give back: For the fourth year in a row, the Moorestown Ministerium will sponsor a service project at Trinity Episcopal Church, in which children put together “birthday boxes” for Catholic Charities, a nonprofit social services organization. The boxes contain festive items like cake mix, frosting, candles, plates, napkins and small gifts—provided by the children—and are distributed by Catholic Charities to its less fortunate clients for birthday celebrations (be it theirs or a …

Moorestonians who want to honor the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by helping their fellow citizens will have plenty of ways to do it Monday. For the third year in a row, the Moorestown Ministerium will sponsor a service project at Trinity Episcopal Church, in which children put together “birthday boxes” for Catholic Charities, a nonprofit social services organization. The boxes contain festive items like cake mix, frosting, candles, plates, napkins and small gifts—provided by the children—and are distributed by Catholic Charities to its less fortunate clients for birthday celebrations (be it theirs or a loved one’s) at its site in Delanco, said the Rev. Ingrid Wengert, moderator for the Ministerium. Wengert said the activity is open…

Graduate students want to volunteer on Martin Luther King Day. Now they just need to connect with organizations who need helping hands.
Most organizations desperate for volunteers usually have trouble finding enough willing hands, but students at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) have a different dilemma—they want to volunteer, now they just need to pair with organizations in need. Students at the UMDNJ’s Stratford campus are seeking organizations that need extra help on Martin Luther King Day, also known as the MLK Day of Service. Volunteers fan out across the nation annually on MLK Day in honor of King’s legacy. “Last year, we had 75-80 volunteers, but not enough locations,” said Yvette Alvarez, a graduate student in public health and biomedical sciences who is helping organize the volunteer day. “In some locations we had so many people there…
