In Pursuit of a Better Library

The Moorestown Library will be closed Friday for a staff development day.

Mark your calendars! Moorestown Library will be closed Friday for a staff development day. We have always prided ourselves on the service we give our patrons here at Moorestown Library. Every day we do our best to combine small-town friendliness and personal attention with professional excellence and efficiency. We're also always looking for ways to improve our service to you. Library Tool Connects Kids with Good Books

The Moorestown Library is offering Lexile help for sixth-graders via a new feature on its website.

If you’re the parent of a sixth-grader at the Upper Elementary School, you have undoubtedly heard of Lexile measures for reading. In fact, you may feel your universe suddenly revolves around Lexile measures, with every waking hour spent trying to find books in your child’s Lexile range. For those not in the know, a Lexile measure is a “piece of information about either an individual's reading ability or the difficulty of a text,” according to Lexile.com. Students’ standardized test scores for reading provide their Lexile range. Books are analyzed by the MetaMetrics company for word frequency and sentence length to determine their Lexile score. Lexile scores provide a starting place for students to find books in a variety of genres that …

New Crosswalk at Library a Bad Idea, Traffic Cop Says

Town council has no plans to put in a temporary crosswalk on Second Street after the township's traffic safety officer cited safety and regulatory concerns.

Dropping a crosswalk in the middle of Second Street to accommodate library patrons would be both potentially dangerous and contrary to federal guidelines, according to Moorestown's traffic safety officer. When residents complained to council about the inconvenience of using the crosswalk at Second and Church streets to get to the library during the construction of town hall, and the dangers of jaywalking that went along with it, township manager Scott Carew turned to Sgt. Randy Pugh for guidance.  A number of people suggested the township install a temporary crosswalk from the parking lot behind Peter Pan Gift Shop to the sidewalk that runs adjacent to the courtyard at the library to give patrons easier access. But Pugh said he examined …

It would be beneficial if the library could relocate one of the book return boxes to the Peter Pan parking lot. Many of my trips to the library consist of just book returns, as I'm sure is the case for many others. A book return across the street might eliminate the need to cross Church St for many people.   more ›

Construction of Town Hall Expected to Begin This Week

Township manager Scott Carew said he also expects to hear from experts about whether the township should install a temporary crosswalk on Second Street.

More than a month and a half after ground was broken, construction of the new town hall complex is expected to begin this week.  Township manager Scott Carew said Sambe Construction has received all the necessary permits to install the footings and foundation and indicated to him crews would be restarting work at the site this week. "They have equipment on their way to the site as we speak," he said Monday.  He also expected to receive an updated construction schedule today, which would replace the outdated one posted on the township website. Sambe has 450 days to complete construction (weather-permitting), beginning when it received a notice to proceed recently.  In addition to the updated timeline, Carew said he would be meeting today …

Old Shoes Taking Up Space in Your House?

Ditch your old kicks and give them to someone who really needs them through the Moorestown Library's latest shoe drive.

If the back of your closet is overflowing with piles of shoes you’ve haven’t worn in years, or if your children continually outgrow their shoes before they wear them out, the Moorestown Library has the perfect solution for cleaning out your closet and doing a good deed all at the same time. The library is hosting a shoe drive to collect new and gently used shoes in all styles and sizes for men, women and children in need. In 2010, Moorestown residents donated 576 pairs of shoes in a library shoe drive, and The Friends of the Library sent them to Soles for Souls, an organization that provides shoes for those in need all over the world. This time, we’re addressing the need for shoes right here in Burlington County by donating shoes to the …
