Moorestown Cancer Survivor Donates $10K+ to Komen Walk

Township tax collector Dorothy Samartino raised more than $10,000 for breast cancer awareness, including $8,273 from last month's Moorestown Night.

Between Moorestown Night and her own individual fundraising, township tax collector and breast cancer survivor Dorothy Samartino was able to donate more than $10,000 to the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk. Samartino is participating in the walk this weekend in Philadelphia. According to township clerk Patricia Hunt, Samartinio's generous contribution made her one of the top 10 fundraisers at the walk, out of thousands of participants.   Hunt, along with several other township employees, organized last month's Moorestown Night at the Camden Riversharks game as a tribute to Samartino. Through T-shirt and ticket sales, as well as a gift basket auction, they were able to raise $8,273 from the event, said Hunt, all of which was donated to the Susan G…

What You Missed from This Week's Council Meeting

Township manager Scott Carew provided an update on the municipal complex project and township clerk Patty Hunt announced the total haul from Moorestown Night.

For those who couldn’t make it to Monday night’s township council meeting, there were a few interesting items that didn’t make it into a full story, but were nonetheless noteworthy. Here are a few leftover tidbits from the meeting: Township council will hold its next regular meeting at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 15 in the IT room at Moorestown High School.

Moorestown teacher Shawn Pickul captured some of the highlights from last Thursday's event at the Camden Riversharks stadium, including a message from breast cancer survivor Dorothy Samartino, who the event was held in honor of.

Moorestown High School cheerleaders, dancers, band members and many more are featured in this video of Moorestown Night highlights, courtesy of our friends at the Moorestown Education Association. Check out photos from the event here.

Photos: Moorestown Night

Hundreds of Moorestonians turned out for the event—the first (but probably not last) of its kind—at Campbell's Field, home of the Camden Riversharks.

Thanks to robust partnerships between multiple facets of the community, the first-ever Moorestown Night was an unqualified success. Organized by a group of township employees, the event's main mission was to raise money for breast cancer survivor Dorothy Samartino's participation in the Susan G Komen 3-Day Breast Cancer Walk in Philadelphia next month. Samartino is the township tax collector.  Karen Maltbie, secretary to the township manager and one of the primary organizers of the event, said a Camden Riversharks representative told her it was one of the team's best-selling September games ever, with roughly 1,000 tickets sold through the Moorestown Night promotion.  The Riversharks presented organizers with a check for $970—a portion of …

UPDATE: Community Coming Together Ahead of First Moorestown Night

Organizers say the support for the event, which is being held in part to support township employee Dorothy Samartino's breast cancer walk, has been "overwhelming."

UPDATE: An itinerary for tonight's festivities has been added to this story in the form of a PDF (attached at right). __________________________ With only a few hours left until Moorestown Night, now’s your last chance to buy a ticket. Township employee Karen Maltbie, one of several organizers, said “hundreds and hundreds of people,” as well as several businesses, have already committed time, money and/or resources to the event on Thursday, Sept. 20, at the Camden Riversharks’ Campbell’s Field. “It’s really coming together,” she said, noting the main driver of the event is to raise money (through ticket and merchandise sales) to support township tax collector Dorothy Samartino’s participation in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Breast Cancer Walk …

Moorestown Speaks: Quotes of the Week

We collected some of the more notable quotes from this week's stories, including two brand new teachers talking about their experiences and a breast cancer survivor overwhelmed by the community's support.

“There were very limited options out there for us. But now when Larry comes home, he’s so excited. And he looks forward to the next day.” Brenda Leese on her husband's experience at The Tender, an adult social group providing care and guidance to seniors with Alzheimer’s and dementia “It’s a really special age. They come in as a blank slate, and you’re teaching them how to learn, how to be in school, and really just giving them the foundation they need to be successful for the rest of their life.” Amanda Casario, first grade teacher at Baker Elementary School "I don’t think you can over-prepare, and that’s what I think is going to help me ... In everything that I do, I always succeed, and I’m going to succeed at whatever I do."  Mikal …

Township Employees Want 'Wave of Pink' at Moorestown Night

Proceeds from the event at the Riversharks' stadium will support township employee and breast cancer survivor Dorothy Samartino's Susan G. Komen Walk this fall.

A wave of pink. That’s what township employee Karen Maltbie wants to see at the first-ever “Moorestown Night” at Campbell’s Field—home of the Camden Riversharks—on Sept. 20. The pink, a symbol of the ongoing fight against breast cancer, is a tribute to fellow township employee Dorothy Samartino. Samartino, township tax collector, is a breast cancer survivor. Proceeds from ticket sales, as well as the sale of pink T-shirts and caps (i.e. the “wave of pink”), will go to support Samartino’s participation in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Breast Cancer Walk in Philadelphia this fall. Samartino, a longtime township employee, was diagnosed with breast cancer a few years ago, and when it happened, “it touched all of us,” said township clerk Patricia …
