Quakers Come Up Just Short in Swimming State Final

With a strong core of swimmers returning, there's no reason Moorestown can't be back in the thick of things next year, coach Jeff DeNick says.

Moorestown may have come up a bit short in its quest for a state championship, but with such a deep pool (no pun intended) of talent, coach Jeff DeNick knows his team will be back.  The Quakers (16-2) did a lot right, but Summit, their opponents, just did it better. Summit bested Moorestown 88-82 in Saturday’s state Group B championship at The College of New Jersey. "The Summit team we faced was strong in a lot of areas," said DeNick.  Moorestown lost one of its best swimmers, junior Ryan Caffrey, earlier this month. Caffrey was out for the entire postseason with a serious back injury and the team "ran into some shortcomings" without his sprinting ability, DeNick said. "Without him, the guys kind of pushed the urgent button and swam a …

Soccer Coach: Team's Effort 'More Satisfying Than Championship'

The Moorestown girls soccer came up short in the state final against Northern Highlands—but these girls have nothing to be ashamed of, their coach said.

For the second year in a row, Moorestown girls soccer fell short of the state title by two goals against Northern Highlands. But no one's going to say they didn't give it their all. “The effort was unbelievable as far as I was concerned,” coach Bill Mulvihill said of Sunday’s game. “(Northern Highlands) is one of the best girls soccer teams I’ve ever played … We probably played that team harder than anyone has the last two years.” After going up 1-0 off a goal by Marie McCool toward the end of the first half, Moorestown (17-5-1) gave up three straight goals in the second to the Highlanders. All three were scored by Hannah Kerner. Northern Highlands (24-0) won 3-1, claiming its second straight state championship—they beat Moorestown 2-0 in …

Deja Vu for Quakers Heading Into Group 3 Final

The Moorestown girls soccer team (17-4-1) will play Northern Highlands (23-0) for the championship for the second year in row—but coach Bill Mulvihill wouldn't have it any other way.

Heading into this weekend’s state championship game, Moorestown girls soccer coach Bill Mulvihill is exactly where he wants to be. His team is peaking at the right time and he’s facing an opponent he and his girls know very well. “If someone had told me at the beginning of the year we’d be back in the final again, I’d have wanted to play Northern Highlands,” said Mulvihill, recalling the strong performance the Quakers had against Northern Highlands in last year’s Group 3 championship—a game that went scoreless until the final 7 minutes thanks to the Quakers’ suffocating defense. Then again, not many people would have picked Moorestown to make it back to the finals this year after the team’s disappointing 0-3 start. The Quakers (17-4-1) …

Moorestown Gets Revenge Against Chargers

Moorestown eliminates Timber Creek with a 3-0 victory in the South Jersey Group 3 semifinals.

In 2010 and 2011, the Timber Creek Regional High School boys’ soccer team eliminated Moorestown in the Group 3 playoffs. The Quakers found revenge in a big way this season. Less than a month after Moorestown defeated Timber Creek in the Coaches Cup, the Quakers did it again—this time by way of a 3-0 victory in the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 3 semifinals Thursday. Mike Handlin scored all three goals, sending No. 1 seed Moorestown to the Group 3 championship, where it will face No. 2 Kingsway. Handlin opened the scoring two minutes in, sending a chip shot past senior goalie Trevor Tierno. The Quakers’ lead remained 1-0 until the second half when Handlin scored twice more to ice the game. The No. 4 seed Chargers were without two of their wing …

Moorestown Boys' Golf 'Close, But No Cigar'

After a strong season, the Quakers (16-2) finished third at the Group 3 sectional tournament earlier this week.

It was a good year for the Moorestown boys’ golf team. Just not good enough. The boys (16-2) competed in the Group 3 sectional tournament earlier this week, finishing in third place behind Burlington Township and Mainland. Justin DeVany, the team’s No. 1 player, finished sixth. Solid finishes, no doubt, but only the top two teams and the top five players get to advance to the state finals at Hopewell Valley, coach Tim O’Reilly said. “We were close, but no cigar, both as a team and on an individual level.” Moorestown performed at a high level all season, knocking off Hunterdon Central—at the time the No. 3 team in the state at the time—early in the season and beating an undefeated Haddonfield team. And they played well at the sectional …
