BOE Member, Volunteer 'Deeply Honored' to be Citizen of the Year

Among his many contributions to the community, William Van Fossen III is one of the co-founders of the Scott Coffee Memorial 8K.

Winners of the Moorestown Service Club’s Citizen of the Year award always seem surprised when they find out they’ve been chosen. But once you hear their resume, it becomes clear why they won. Take the 2013 Citizen of the Year, William Van Fossen III: school board member, former member of the YMCA board, a member of the Rotary for nearly 30 years and co-organizer of the Scott Coffee Memorial 8K. Van Fossen’s family has deep roots in Moorestown, going back multiple generations, and he himself has spent his entire life here. He explained he’s always felt a call to service. “I was surprised (that I won), but deeply honored that I would received this honor,” he said. “It was nice to be thought of that way.” Though Van Fossen’s philanthropic …

Moorestown Rotary Awards $22K in College Scholarships

Eleven Moorestown High School seniors were honored by the Rotary earlier this month.

The Rotary Club of Moorestown awarded a total of $22,000 in college scholarships to 11 Moorestown High School students earlier this month. The students were honored during the Rotary Club’s lunch meeting on June 14, where Rotarians heard from the students about their college of choice and their majors. They were each given $2,000. Rotarians enjoyed the opportunity to give “happy dollars” for those colleges where they themselves had attended. “The scholarship recipients were selected on the basis of scholastic achievement, extracurricular activities and financial need,” said Jeremy Countess, chair of the Scholarship Selection Committee. In 49 years of scholarship giving, the Rotary Club of Moorestown has awarded $509,000 to promising and …

While we applaud the rotary, it must be also stated that there are dozens of other organizations in town like the MBA , and Moorestown Republican Club and mia, etc that awarded seniors at MHS with scholarships. Perhaps Patch may want to display all those organizations that contributed to awarding scholarships. That would be a hood service   more ›

Rotary 8K Training Helps with Community House Campaign

“The Community House has always been the start and finish for the runs ... For me, I kind of have a soft spot for the Community House.”

There’s less than four months left before the 28th annual Scott Coffee Moorestown Rotary 8K on June 2. Haven’t laced up your running shoes in a while? According to Colleen Tindall of Moorestown Running Company, there’s still time to get yourself ready for the nearly 5-mile dash through downtown Moorestown. Moorestown Running Company will be offering a training program open to all ages and fitness levels. The program will include a weekly training schedule, group training and runs throughout each week, and clinics including core strength building. “The biggest thing people need to get used to is the running,” said Tindall, who will be running the training program. “You could have never run a step in your life or you could be a really good …

Thank-you Patch for covering our training program! I thought it necessary to make one correction: I was second overall last year to a woman I admire and Olympic Trials qualifier Dooreen McCoubrie! I remember very well, because she met me at the finish line with a big smile and congratulations. Colleen Tindall   more ›

Moorestown Rotarians Raise $10,000+ for Charity

The clubs' joint pancake breakfast drew more than 700 people to Moorestown High School Sunday.

More than 700 people came out again Sunday to make the Moorestown Rotary Club Pancake Breakfast a success. In its 36th year, the event, held at Moorestown High School, raised north of $10,000 for charities supported by both the breakfast and lunch rotaries, according to event co-chair Mike Wilson. Wilson's fellow co-chair, Rob Mazza, attributes the long-running success of the pancake breakfast to the collaborative efforts of both rotaries. "It's a great event because both of the rotary clubs in Moorestown come together to pull off this event," said Mazza. "It's wonderful thing you can have this much cooperation between two groups in town."

Humble Volunteer Named Moorestown's 2012 Citizen of the Year

“To me, it’s just part of being part of the whole brotherhood of humanity,” says Douglas Sell, after learning he'd been named Citizen of the Year.

Moorestown’s 2012 Citizen of the Year may, in fact, be a schmuck. But, a charitable schmuck. “I’m one step away from falling down and being a schmuck,” said Douglas Sell, announced as the Citizen of the Year Wednesday. “I probably am one. I’m just successful at hiding it.” Sell was named Moorestown’s 59th Citizen of the Year by the Moorestown Service Club Council, comprised of the Y Service Club, the Lion’s Club and the Rotary clubs. In spite of his long-as-your-arm track record of civic volunteerism and charitable deeds—including the First United Methodist Church’s Adult Choir and Mission Committee, Moorestown School Board, United Way of Burlington County, Burlington County Council of the Boy Scouts of America and Moorestown’s Low and …

Perhaps it is because people feel better giving where there is NOTHING, instead of where only improvements are needed. And, with the Moorestown tax bill being what it is, perhaps people feel that is already sufficient. Most of all, no one should force anyone to give where one does not feel inclined to give. Considering that many people give nothing, no one should complain about where an already …   more ›

Moorestown Rotarian Raises Money for Irene-Devastated Vt. Town

After watching her second home in Wilmington, VT, destroyed by Irene, Elaine Tryjankowski was resolved to help.

Elaine Tryjankowski’s first home in Moorestown may have escaped Hurricane Irene—or rather, Tropical Storm Irene—more or less unscathed, but her second home wasn’t so lucky. When floodwaters swept through Wilmington, VT, in August—one of the hardest hit towns in one of the hardest hit states—Tryjankowski was resolved to do something. She’d been spending half her time in the quaint little southern Vermont town. Six years ago, on a whim, she closed her eyes, pressed her finger to a map and landed on Wilmington. She bought a condo “and just fell in love.” Tryjankowski spends six to eight months a year there. So when Irene devastated Wilmington, it struck her as hard as if those floodwaters had ripped through Main Street Moorestown. She …
