Letters to the Editor

Letter: GOP Council Winners 'Humbled' by Victory

Republican councilmembers-elect Phil Garwood and Victoria Napolitano thank their supporters as they get ready to take office in January.

To the editor: With the final votes counted, we are humbled and honored to write to you as your councilmembers-elect. We are proud of the vigorous and issue-based campaign we ran, and we are unbelievably grateful for the outpouring of support we received over the last eight months from all parts of town. We are especially thankful to our families, friends and campaign volunteers whose support never wavered and who stood by us through thick and thin. As we transition from campaigning to governance, we are acutely aware our town is at a critical crossroads. Our town faces difficult challenges, but we are excited to roll up our sleeves and get to work. We congratulate councilman-elect Greg Newcomer on his hard-fought victory, and we believe …

UPDATED: Council Race Decided, Newcomer Wins

Democratic candidate Greg Newcomer held onto his slim lead in the Moorestown council race to edge out Republican Pete Palko following the counting of the provisional ballots.

UPDATE: Democratic Councilman-elect Greg Newcomer thanked those who voted for him—as well as his running mates and Democratic colleagues—and said he was honored to serve. He also congratulated his fellow winners, Republicans Phil Garwood and Victoria Napolitano, as well as their ousted running mate Pete Palko. "My No. 1 priority is to work collaboratively to restore the citizen's voice to Moorestown," Newcomer wrote in a statement to Moorestown Patch. "I will urge and recommend the Citizens' Requests and Presentations be restored to the middle of the council agenda. I will also advocate a town meeting or meetings to discuss ways to improve town government, preserve Moorestown's heritage and work toward active participation by all citizens …

Council Race Could Be Settled Today

A Republican Party official said he expects provisional ballots to be counted today in the extremely tight Moorestown township council race.

By the end of the day today—nearly two full weeks after the election—Moorestown's town council race could finally be decided. Following the counting of the absentee ballots—all 1,416 of them—only 12 votes separated Democratic candidate Greg Newcomer and Republican candidate Pete Palko as the third-place vote-getter, behind Republicans Victoria Napolitano and Phil Garwood. Republican campaign manager Steve Solomon said there are more than 120 provisional ballots that need to be counted. The deadline for provisional ballots to be turned in was Monday (Nov. 19)—the state extended the deadline because of Hurricane Sandy—and Solomon said he was told the county would be tallying them Tuesday. "We will know by the end of the day (Tuesday) who won…

Moorestown Splits Vote in Tight Town Council Race

Republicans Phil Garwood and Victoria Napolitano, along with Democrat Greg Newcomer, were elected to township council in a race where the candidates were separated by the slimmest of margins.

Moorestown split its vote for town council, electing two Republicans and one Democrat in a tightly contested race. Republicans Victoria Napolitano and Phil Garwood scored 4,920 and 4,818 votes respectively, with Democrat Greg Newcomer coming in third with 4,754 votes. Only 49 votes—not including absentee ballots—separated Newcomer and GOP candidate Pete Palko. A Republican source said Newcomer’s advantage was reduced to 13 votes with the absentee ballots counted—and that didn’t include the provisional ballots. Republican campaign manager Steve Solomon said county GOP representatives were advising him not to concede the race Tuesday night. He was told there were “hundreds” of provisionals yet to be counted, which won’t be tallied until 10 …

Letter: Why do Republicans Refuse to Debate?

A Democratic supporter suggests the Republican council candidates turned down the Democrats' debate offer because they don't have much of a record to stand on.

To the editor: Debating the issues, in front of voters, is a time-honored tradition in American politics. Voters want to make informed decisions, and debates are always an effective means to help voters make the right decisions on how to use their voting power. Most recently, the three presidential debates in 2012 were watched by tens of millions of voters eager to hear directly from the candidates. In Moorestown, debates have always been part of this tradition. On our ballot for Nov. 6, there are contests for president, the U.S. Senate, the U.S. House of Representatives, Burlington County Freeholders, Moorestown Township Council and the Moorestown Board of Education. All of these races, with one exception, have had at least one public and…

Sen. Diane Allen Endorses Republican Council Candidates

The Republican candidates have also been endorsed by their GOP cohorts on the Burlington County freeholder board.

Republican town council candidates Phil Garwood, Victoria Napolitano and Pete Palko picked up an endorsement from Moorestown native and District 7 Senator Diane Allen this week. In a letter from Allen, she wrote, “The Garwood, Napolitano and Palko team have a real plan to keep Moorestown’s taxes in check, eliminate government waste and be responsive to the needs of their constituents. Their team supports protecting and building on Moorestown’s robust open space program, and will fight to protect and preserve the many natural treasures that this town has to offer.” She added, “Phil, Victoria and Pete are committed to reviving Moorestown’s local business districts from Main Street to Camden Avenue, and will restore this town’s economic …

Candidates Lay Out Ideas for Improving Moorestown Business Climate

The candidates for township council stopped by the Moorestown Business Association to explain the variety of ways they could help new and existing businesses in town.

Both the Republican and Democratic candidates for township council visited with local businesses at the Moorestown Business Association (MBA) meeting Wednesday and were given the chance to explain how they would improve the business climate in Moorestown. The candidates—with the exception of Republican candidate Phil Garwood, who was unable to attend the meeting—offered various strategies for how to aid the revitalization of the township’s business districts, ranging from the hiring of a Main Street manager to the streamlining of regulations through the use of technology. What follows is a summary of each of the candidates’ views: Brian Sattinger (Democratic candidate) “What we’ve been hearing a lot is complaints about difficulties (with …

Freeholders Endorse Republican Council Candidates

All five of the Burlington County freeholders gave the nod to the Moorestown GOP candidates.

The Republican candidates for township council picked up a major endorsement this week, with all five Burlington County freeholders throwing their support behind the ticket. “As freeholders, we have proudly served as advocates of the county property taxpayer and voices for our county's citizens,” the freeholders said in a joint statement. “We have cut county property taxes, reduced county spending and provided grants to local towns to build and expand local parks and recreation areas throughout the county. We believe Phil (Garwood), Victoria (Napolitano) and Pete (Palko) will bring that same fiscally responsible approach to Moorestown." Freeholder Director Bruce Garganio said he was “proud” to be running on the same ticket with the GOP …
