New Pope: 'Not Business as Usual,' Says OLGC Priest

Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio is the first non-European pope in a millennia and the first-ever Latin American pontiff. What do you think of the selection?

Wednesday's papal selection could represent the start of a significant new chapter in the history of the Catholic Church, according to a pastor at Our Lady of Good Counsel. The Rev. Damian McElroy said he was "exhilarated" by the selection of Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio. "It sets a tone," said McElroy, explaining the significance of having a new pope. "Each pope brings a particular identity to the papacy, and to the identity of what it means to be a Catholic." Though McElroy said he didn't know what to expect from the new pontiff—and admitted he had never heard of Bergoglio before he was introduced—he suggested the Church could be in for some rather significant changes during his tenure. "My feeling is, it's not business as …

Police Visits to Moorestown Schools to Become the Norm

Moorestown police officers have started dropping by all the township schools in an effort to create a greater sense of security.

Moorestown Police are beginning to make their presence felt throughout all the township's schools by doing random pop-ins, in light of the heightened sensitivity to school security. Police spokesman Lt. Lee Lieber said the department approached the schools in town—including the public schools, Moorestown Friends, Our Lady of Good Counsel and Kingsway Learning Center—shortly after the Newtown, CT, tragedy to offer to have officers stop in to the schools during their regular patrols. The visits serve multiple purposes, Lieber explained. For one thing, they're peace of mind for the parents, students and staff, as well as a potential deterrent for anyone who might want to cause harm. But the primary motivation is preparedness, he said. The …

Having two children in Moorestown schools, I am not happy with this plan and it doesn't make me feel any more secure. No offense to anyone in particular, but I am not convinced beyond a reasonable doubt that every police officer is solely capable of dealing with a crisis in a clear and concise manner. Look at the off duty cop that got into an argument with his neighbor in Philadelphia and killed …   more ›

Local Catholics 'Shocked' by Pope's Resignation

It's unknown whether Pope Benedict's resignation—the first in 600 years—will affect the Vatican's visit to Philly in 2015.

Pope Benedict XVI's sudden decision to resign his post—the first pontiff to do so in 600 years—due to health concerns surely took many local Catholics by surprise.  Dr. Linda Dix, director of religious education at Our Lady of Good Counsel (OLGC), said she and others were "shocked" by the announcement Monday. But it was the right decision, both for the pope and for the church. "It says a lot about his wisdom and his regard for the office," she said.  Benedict's resignation is effective Feb. 28. The decision sets the stage for a conclave to elect a new pope before the end of March. Though there are no clear front-runners, there's already plenty of speculation as to who Benedict's replacement will be. Dix mentioned that some people have …

While it won't happen anytime soon, imagine a more progressive Pope (and church) who welcomes gays, allows women to be priests, allows priests to be married, gets with the times in terms of birth control and has zero tolerance for abusive priests/those that cover up for abusive priests. Now that would get them back in the pews!!   more ›

Schedule of Events for OLGC Catholic Schools Week

The school kicks off its weeklong celebration of Catholic Schools Week with an open house this morning.

All this week, Our Lady of Good Counsel will mark Catholic Schools Week, beginning with an open house today at the Early Childhood Center. The school will hold a second open house from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday for grades 1-8. Prospective parents will have the opportunity to walk through the school and speak with staff and current parents.  The fun stuff (at least from the students’ perspective) comes later in the week, with a “Buddy Lunch” for kindergarten and eighth-grade students and a Family Feud-style competition between grades on Tuesday, a spelling bee Wednesday, Student-Teacher Day on Thursday (in which students dress and act as teachers for the day) and a pep rally on Friday. The school will also recognize several individuals throughout…

OLGC Draws Attention to Camden's Murder Rate with Sobering Display

Parishioners created the display—each cross representing one of Camden's 60 murder victims this year, a new record for the beleaguered city.

On a map, Moorestown and Camden are less than a dozen miles apart. On the cultural and social spectrum however, they couldn’t be further from each other. The former was named America’s “Best Place to Live” a few years back, while the latter was dubbed the most dangerous city in the country three years ago (and has ranked in the top 10 for many more). With that in mind, parishioners at Our Lady of Good Counsel (OLGC) got together recently to erect a visual reminder of the plight of their neighbor city—which broke a longstanding record for homicides this year—by planting 60 wooden crosses in front of the church, each one representing a murder victim. Deacon Tom Kolon, who heads OLGC’s Respect Life Committee, said the display is a spin-off of…

Photo Gallery: OLGC Pep Rally

Our Lady of Good Counsel closed out Catholic Schools Week with a raucous pep rally.

Hundreds of Our Lady of Good Counsel (OLGC) students packed the gymnasium Friday afternoon for a pep rally to close out Catholic Schools Week. Marketing director Michelle Molz said the week—marked by Catholic Schools across the country—was a success, with many parents visiting the school during open houses. Students and staff took part in several activities throughout the week, including a Buddy Lunch for students in kindergarten and 8th grade, the presentation of the Graduate of the Year award to teacher Mary Christ, Student-Teacher Day (students and teachers swap roles), and of course, the pep rally. Every grade level and sports team was represented at the ear-splitting rally. Moorestown Patch was there to capture some of the images from…

OLGC Presents Award to Dedicated Supporter of Catholic Education

The school's Sister Michael Vincent Award went to Roxanne Adinolfi this year.

The following release was submitted by Our Lady of Good Counsel School: Roxanne Adinolfi received Our Lady of Good Counsel (OLGC) School’s Sister Michael Vincent Award on Feb. 1 during a special Catholic Schools Week Mass. This is the 12th year for the award, given to a strong supporter of Catholic education and named for a very dedicated school principal who served from 1985 to 2000 and has since passed away. Adinolfi, a Moorestown resident and president of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, is an active member of OLGC parish, along with her husband, Robert. Their daughter, Christina, is a graduate of OLGC school and was enrolled in the first kindergarten class in 1988. The following year, Adinolfi taught fourth grade at the school…

OLGC Preps for Catholic Schools Week

Catholic school grew by 4 percent in 2011, bucking national trend.

At a time when Catholic school enrollment is in decline nationwide, Our Lady of Good Counsel (OLGC) is “bucking the trend,” according to Michelle Molz, marketing director for the school. While overall enrollment nationwide dropped 22 percent between 2010 and 2011, according to the most recent report from the National Catholic Educational Association, Molz said OLGC enrollment grew 4 percent in 2011, and has grown previous years as well. Starting next week, the school will have a chance to celebrate its success during Catholic Schools Week. The annual tradition, marked by Catholic schools across the country, serves a dual purpose, according to Molz. “It’s a wonderful chance for the kids to take pride in what they do every day,” she said. “(…
