Township council unanimously supported the reinstatement of a second public comment portion to its meetings, as well as "office hours" for council members.
Fulfilling their campaign promises, new council members Greg Newcomer, Phil Garwood and Victoria Napolitano—along with Mayor Stacey Jordan and Deputy Mayor Chris Chiacchio—took steps Monday night to give the public more chances to have their voices heard. Beginning next Monday, members of council will hold "office hours," giving residents an opportunity to meet with them in a more informal setting. Garwood and Newcomer will make themselves available at 7:30 p.m. Monday (Feb. 4) in the New Jersey Room at the library. "There's a lot of smart people in this town," said Garwood. "We should listen to them." In a statement released after Monday night's council meeting, Jordan stated, "By holding office hours outside of regular council meetings…

To the editor: With the final votes counted, we are humbled and honored to write to you as your councilmembers-elect. We are proud of the vigorous and issue-based campaign we ran, and we are unbelievably grateful for the outpouring of support we received over the last eight months from all parts of town. We are especially thankful to our families, friends and campaign volunteers whose support never wavered and who stood by us through thick and thin. As we transition from campaigning to governance, we are acutely aware our town is at a critical crossroads. Our town faces difficult challenges, but we are excited to roll up our sleeves and get to work. We congratulate councilman-elect Greg Newcomer on his hard-fought victory, and we believe …

UPDATE: Democratic Councilman-elect Greg Newcomer thanked those who voted for him—as well as his running mates and Democratic colleagues—and said he was honored to serve. He also congratulated his fellow winners, Republicans Phil Garwood and Victoria Napolitano, as well as their ousted running mate Pete Palko. "My No. 1 priority is to work collaboratively to restore the citizen's voice to Moorestown," Newcomer wrote in a statement to Moorestown Patch. "I will urge and recommend the Citizens' Requests and Presentations be restored to the middle of the council agenda. I will also advocate a town meeting or meetings to discuss ways to improve town government, preserve Moorestown's heritage and work toward active participation by all citizens …

By the end of the day today—nearly two full weeks after the election—Moorestown's town council race could finally be decided. Following the counting of the absentee ballots—all 1,416 of them—only 12 votes separated Democratic candidate Greg Newcomer and Republican candidate Pete Palko as the third-place vote-getter, behind Republicans Victoria Napolitano and Phil Garwood. Republican campaign manager Steve Solomon said there are more than 120 provisional ballots that need to be counted. The deadline for provisional ballots to be turned in was Monday (Nov. 19)—the state extended the deadline because of Hurricane Sandy—and Solomon said he was told the county would be tallying them Tuesday. "We will know by the end of the day (Tuesday) who won…

Moorestown split its vote for town council, electing two Republicans and one Democrat in a tightly contested race. Republicans Victoria Napolitano and Phil Garwood scored 4,920 and 4,818 votes respectively, with Democrat Greg Newcomer coming in third with 4,754 votes. Only 49 votes—not including absentee ballots—separated Newcomer and GOP candidate Pete Palko. A Republican source said Newcomer’s advantage was reduced to 13 votes with the absentee ballots counted—and that didn’t include the provisional ballots. Republican campaign manager Steve Solomon said county GOP representatives were advising him not to concede the race Tuesday night. He was told there were “hundreds” of provisionals yet to be counted, which won’t be tallied until 10 …

To the editor: When we were both campaigning in 2010, we ran on a promise of keeping taxes as low as possible, maintaining the quality of our town’s services and moving forward with solving the town hall debacle. Since then, we have worked diligently to ensure these promises would become a reality. Along with our council colleagues, we have worked toward a fiscally responsible budget, and this year, council was able to put forward a budget that had a zero increase in the municipal tax levy. We have worked to move forward with improvements to our town’s many athletic facilities and theChurch Street Recreation Center, while at the same time defending the integrity and purpose of our town’s Open Space, Recreation, Farmland and Historic …

To the editor: As Moorestown gets back on our feet—even while some of us continue to be without power, including my family—we need to remember that the direction our country will be moving over the next four years will be decided next week as the election fast approaches. Regardless of your party affiliation, it’s important to take the time to vote for what you believe in so our country can move forward in a direction the majority of us want from our federal government. Hopefully that is for all Republican nominees in column 2, because we have to change the direction our country is heading, reinvest in small business and stop the ridiculous spending and debt from rising, which will ultimately harm our children’s ability to have families of…

To the editor: As we have spent time knocking on thousands of doors in our town, the three of us have had an opportunity to hear firsthand about the issues that Moorestown voters care about. Not surprisingly, nearly every person places taxes on the top of their list. Lots of politicians talk about reining in taxes and cutting government waste. Our team actually has a plan to do it. If elected, we will: Review the municipal budget for efficiency improvements and cost reductions Work to revive our local business districts by encouraging redevelopment of commercial properties that are not currently ratable producers Continue to pursue shared services options both in-house (board of education) and outside. Our high-quality services can be an…

Moorestown Republican candidates for council Phil Garwood, Victoria Napolitano and Pete Palko discuss Open Space, economic development, and why it's important to listen to everyone.
It may be overstating the obvious, but the job of any political candidate is to convey who they are to the voting public. Gearing up to compete in what will be a crowded race this fall, the three Republican candidates for council—Victoria Napolitano, Phil Garwood and Pete Palko—have their work cut out for them in that regard. “The more crowded the field is, the more challenging it is for any individual in the race to define who they are,” said Napolitano. “That’s the most important thing for us, and always was even when there were fewer people in the race. Our campaign is about letting people know who we are and what we want to do … Because then if they elect us into office, that to me says, ‘We like the way you’re thinking.’” Of course, …
