New Lease on Life for Local Deli

A Riverton family has perked up the familiar Riverline Deli and hopes to draw in the locals again.

When Jon "Ben" Slashinski received that early morning phone call from a neighbor saying the street outside his store, the Riverline Deli, was flooded, all he could think about was the extensive work he and his family had just completed three months earlier.  “I thought we were going to find some water in the store, but we lucked out,” says Ben, 30, of a major water main rupture that occurred last Monday at the corner of Broad and Main streets in Riverton.  Luckily, not a drop flowed in. Slashinski is the newest owner, along with his mother, Debbie Slashinski, 53, and his brother, Shawn Slashinski, 38, of the food store in the red brick building, which opened Sept. 1. When the Slashinski family happened upon the deli in Riverton last summer…

Former Moorestown Teacher Makes the Grade with Tutoring Business

Riverton's Impact Learning Center is more than just a retail store.

Neil K. Clancy, owner of Riverton’s Impact Learning Center, is taking a very brief break to have a quick bite to eat. He’s a busy guy—but he’s not complaining. As a matter of fact, the exuberant Clancy brims with enthusiasm when describing his tutoring profession. Decades ago, afterschool tutoring was rare. But with standardized tests and SATs intensifying competition to not only get into the best colleges, but sometimes a better high school, parents in recent years have sought out tutoring centers for their kids. Or sometimes, as Clancy explains, a kid just needs that extra boost. Four years ago, Clancy opened his Main Street store in Riverton mainly as a small-town school supply emporium, and it still sells items like math workbooks, …

Catch the Scoop on Riverton’s Old-Fashioned Ice Cream Shop

Nellie Bly’s Ice Cream Parlour dishes out creamy treats to the locals.

The temperatures on this July afternoon were nearing triple digits, but the two little boys inside Nellie Bly’s Ice Cream Parlour on Main Street couldn’t care less. As they both licked and slurped from their chocolate ice cream cones, they wore the look of summertime contentment—as well as some drippings from their cones. If for some reason you’ve missed the chance to gorge on an ice cream treat at this old-time salon, you are officially in small company. Maureen Brzycki was hired as a manager a couple years ago to work at the store by the former owners, Maureen and Mark Miller, family friends of Brzycki.  “Maureen and Mark had a passion for fun summer restaurants, reminiscent of days that they've spent at their home outside Wildwood. They…

Local Deli: Pushing Sandwiches at the Neighborhood Market

The bricks-and-mortar structure, where the Riverton Deli resides, has lived through a few incarnations.

Terry Bridge Jr. wants to imbue more of that neighborhood feeling into his food market, The Riverton Deli. The all-too-familiar storefront was taken over by Bridge from a family member last August, and he’s pledging to have the deli regain its competitive edge with the locals in the sandwich market. “In the early ’90s, I used to come in here, and it would be five-people deep, while everyone was waiting for orders,” recalls Bridge. “I’d like to see that again.” Bridge isn’t surprised, or even miffed, that folks patronize other locales, like fast food franchises. And he understands the big-box supermarkets, who sell lunch meats and package hoagies-to-go, have squeezed out some of the small businesses. “But if you buy from someone like me, it…
