Q&A with Moorestown's New Superintendent, Part I

Moorestown School District Superintendent Brian Betze sat down with Patch to talk about the challenges (and opportunities) of leading a larger district and where he sees room for improvement.

New Moorestown School District Superintendent Brian Betze has been on the job for a little more than a month. Betze left the Berlin Township School District, where he served as superintendent for nine years, to take over for former Moorestown superintendent John Bach at the beginning of July and has kept himself busy settling into his new job and making the rounds—meeting students, staff members and townspeople. Betze comes to Moorestown with 25 years of experience as an educator, including stints as a middle school principal in Cherry Hill, Washington Township (Morris County) and Shamong, as well as supervisor of special education and curriculum in Linwood. He began his career as a high school art teacher in Bethlehem, PA. The Marlton …

Moorestown BOE Welcomes New Superintendent

"An educator first and foremost" replaces "a consummate professional, a leader at all levels."

The Moorestown Board of Education officially welcomed soon-to-be new Superintendent Brian Betze to the fold Tuesday, while members of the district community offered words of praise for outgoing Superintendent John Bach. The board formally voted to hire Betze—currently the Berlin Township School District superintendent—Tuesday, though he’d been offered, and accepted, the job last month. Board President Don Mishler said Betze’s contract is for five years at $165,000/year—just below the state-imposed cap. Speaking before the board and the audience, Betze said, “I look forward to working with the staff and teachers and parents in continuing the tradition of excellence here in Moorestown.” While he doesn’t officially start until the first week …

Moorestown Selects New Superintendent After Exhaustive Search

Berlin Township Superintendent Brian Betze accepted the BOE's offer Tuesday night.

After two exhaustive searches, the Moorestown School District has selected a new superintendent. The board of education offered the job Tuesday night to Berlin Township School District Superintendent Brian Betze, who subsequently accepted the offer. Board President Don Mishler said the hire is still somewhat unofficial until the board formally approves it at their May meeting. Betze himself broke the news in a letter to the Berlin School District community Tuesday, in which he wrote, “A once in a lifetime chance unexpectedly fell in my lap and is a professional opportunity I could not pass up.” Reached for comment Thursday, Betze described Moorestown as a “very prestigious, well-respected” district, and sounded excited at the prospect of …

BOE Interviews New Superintendent Candidates

The Moorestown Board of Education had to restart its search for a superintendent after their first candidate dropped out.

Members of the Moorestown Board of Education spent several hours behind closed doors Wednesday night interviewing new candidates for superintendent. The board had to hit the reset button on its search for a new superintendent after the candidate they had honed in on withdrew his name from consideration, according to Board President Don Mishler, who declined to explain why the candidate dropped out. That left the board with three options: start the search process over, find an interim superintendent, or a combination of the two. Mishler said the board interviewed three candidates Wednesday for a permanent position as superintendent. He wouldn’t say whether the candidates were in-house or otherwise, but said, “We haven’t interviewed any of …

After Failed Search, Teachers Make Pitch for In-House Superintendent

The Moorestown Board of Education is still mulling its options after a failed superintendent search, though an interim administrator seems likely.

While the board of education weighs its next steps after a failed superintendent search, members of the Moorestown Education Association (MEA) are baffled the job hasn’t been offered to assistant superintendent Kate Reilly. MEA President Lisa Trapani asked the board Tuesday night whether it had re-advertised for a superintendent. Board President Don Mishler said they had not, nor had they decided whether to restart the search or find an interim superintendent. Mishler did say however that it’s “really late in the process for hiring a permanent superintendent … Conducting a traditional search now would be unlikely very fruitful.” Superintendent John Bach will end his five-year tenure at the end of the 2012 school year. When asked by Trapani…

Superintendent Search Back to Square One

The Moorestown Board of Education is now faced with restarting the search process, hiring an interim superintendent, or both.

After a lengthy search, the Moorestown Board of Education was unable to find its next superintendent. Board Member Matthew Simeone said last month “one strong candidate” had emerged from the search process, which started in the fall. However, following a special board meeting Tuesday night, he said the district no longer has a candidate. Simeone did not explain why the candidate was out, but said the district now faces three ways forward: restart the search, hire an interim superintendent or a combination of the two. Though the board did not settle on a plan of action Tuesday, Simeone indicated it would be difficult to find a permanent replacement for outgoing Superintendent John Bach before his tenure ends this summer. “Our preference …

BOE Whittles Superintendent Search Down to One

After a months-long search, "one strong candidate has emerged," according to Board Member Matt Simeone.

After months of planning, consultations and interviews, the board of education has narrowed its search for a new superintendent down to a single candidate. Board Member Matthew Simeone explained Tuesday the board—in collaboration with search firm West Hudson Associates—whittled down its initial pool of candidates to six in late January. Those six were brought in for interviews a few weeks ago, and from there the pool was dropped to a group of three, he said. And from that, “one strong candidate has emerged.” Simeone wouldn’t say who the candidate was or reveal any identifying details—since he or she is currently employed somewhere else—but said the candidate matches up extremely well with the profile crafted by the board, which was based …

And perhaps the town could also use some of the administrations buildings instead of building a new town hall we don't need. Maybe the UES can be converted. Even consolidate some of the libraries because after all books are books. Think of all of the money saved, we could keep Mr. Bach and pay our great teachers more.   more ›

Crowd Provides Criteria for Superintendent Search

West Hudson Associates, the search firm hired by the district, solicited opinions during a public forum Monday night.

Based on the feedback generated from a public forum Monday night regarding its search for a new superintendent, if Moorestown School District placed a personal ad for the job, it might read something like this: “Blue-ribbon school district seeks superintendent who is approachable, passionate, has experience working with children, possesses good business sense, is open to technology but not slavishly devoted to it, and has experience leading through periods of change.” That’s just a sampling of what Bill Librera and Judith Ferguson—representatives from West Hudson Associates, the firm hired by the district to aid in the search—heard from the mixed crowd of parents, teachers and parents/teachers at William Allen Middle School. One member of …

Public Forum for Superintendent Search Tonight

West Hudson Associates, the superintendent search firm hired by the district, will solicit opinions from the community at William Allen tonight.

Have an opinion about who the district should select for its next superintendent? Here's your chance. West Hudson Associates, the firm hired by the school district to aid in the search for a new superintendent, will host a community forum at 7 p.m. tonight at the middle school. Board Member Matt Simeone, superintendent search committee chair, said residents will have an "open microphone" at the meeting. "Anyone can come and offer their opinions ... unfiltered," he said.  West Hudson had also solicited the public's opinion via survey beginning in mid-November. Simeone said the deadline for surveys to be submitted was last Friday and West Hudson and the district are now in the process of compiling date from those surveys. Superintendent John…

Public's Input Sought in Moorestown Superintendent Search

The district and search firm West Hudson Associates will solicit input from the community through surveys and a public forum next month.

Residents of the Moorestown School District who want to contribute their two cents to the district’s search for a new superintendent will be given two ways to do it. On Friday, a survey—developed by search firm West Hudson Associates with input from the school board—will be put up on the district’s website and will also be available in email and hard-copy form at the administration building. Superintendent search committee chair Matt Simeone said the comprehensive survey will include a combination of “preference questions and open-ended questions.” West Hudson will also host a two-hour public forum at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5, at William Allen Middle School as a further means to solicit opinions from the community to aid in the search. “We’re…

$175K, not enough? Typical, useless, administrative nonsense. I say terminate him now, spend the 6-8 month search time frame without a superintendent and then make the evaluation as to one is even necessary. I mean, c'mon. $175K to supervise 6 schools, schools full of highly educated administrators? I say, thanks but no thanks, you're services are no longer welcome or needed.   more ›
