For those who couldn’t make it to this week’s township council meeting, there were a few interesting items that didn’t make it into a full story, but were nonetheless noteworthy. Here are a few leftover tidbits from the meeting: - Mayor John Button and township manager Scott Carew showered praised on the emergency responders, public works employees and township officials who worked tirelessly throughout Hurricane Sandy. "They really have not only put in dozens and dozens of hours in a row, they've done so in many cases by putting themselves in harm's way," said Carew, who was particularly complimentary regarding Moorestown Police Sgt. Lee Lieber, the township's emergency management coordinator, and public works director Ken Ewers. "I don't…

In-kind donations from several contractors helped the Moorestown Lacrosse Club and Moorestown Youth Football replace their defunct scoreboard.
Thanks to generous in-kind donors, a pair of Moorestown sports clubs were able to obtain a new scoreboard for the existing turf field at Wesley Bishop North after years without a working one. Kelly Dalmass, president of the Moorestown Lacrosse Club, said she and the Moorestown Youth Football Association (MYFA) have been trying for the last few years to get their hands on a new scoreboard. They recently purchased one, with each club pitching in $4,000, most of which came from fundraising. The installation and ancillary services, however, were donated by a group of local contractors that included: Dalmass was unable to apply an exact dollar value to the services that were provided, but the cost for the scoreboard for the new turf field in …

Members of STEM withdrew their lawsuit against the township after council voted to bond for improvements to Wesley Bishop rather than use money from the Open Space Trust Fund.
Open space supporters have dropped their lawsuit against the township after council walked back its decision to use the Open Space Trust Fund for field improvements. Elizabeth Endres, a member of STEM (Save The Environment of Moorestown), said the organization contacted attorney Jeffrey Baron last Tuesday—the day after council voted to rescind a resolution to use $1.5 million from the Trust Fund for improvements to Wesley Bishop North—and asked him to withdraw STEM’s lawsuit against the township. On Monday, Mayor John Button confirmed the lawsuit had been withdrawn, saying, “It’s good. We’re moving forward with things that have been outstanding.” Council voted to bond for the Wesley Bishop North project the same night it rescinded the use …

Moorestown township manager Scott Carew says the township has enough revenue and savings coming its way to offset the many projects on its plate.
A rough sketch of Moorestown’s fiscal future shows it has enough money to complete most of its major capital projects—without having to raise taxes. After Councilman Mike Testa voted against a bond ordinance to fund improvements to the Church Street Recreation Center, claiming he needed to know what the tax impact would be, financial officer Tom Merchel prepared a budgetary outline laying out every financially significant project currently on the township’s plate. The sum total of the projects on the list—including $13.3 million for the new municipal complex, $690,000 for the rec center, and $1.4 million for Wesley Bishop North—came to $19 million. Township manager Scott Carew said, based on Merchel’s projections, that $19 million would …

Meanwhile, Deputy Mayor Greg Gallo said he expects a resolution to the long-delayed field improvement project at Wesley Bishop North in the near future.
Once the Moorestown athletic clubs get their sponsorship program off the ground, they may be able to keep a portion of the money they raise. After dropping off the council agenda for the last couple months, township manager Scott Carew provided an update Monday, telling council he would soon be meeting with the various sports clubs soon to devise a “menu” that could be provided to potential sponsors. Carew credited the volunteers who have worked on putting the sponsorship program together and told council, “It would be fair, in the first year, to let the clubs take 25 percent of what they raise (to use) as they see fit,” while the rest of the money would go to the township. Ultimately of course, it’s up to council. Deputy Mayor Greg Gallo…

For the second time in as many years, the David Gentile skate park at Wesley Bishop North has been shut down for repairs. Parks and recreation director Theresa Miller said the park was closed on April 19 after a quarterly inspection revealed major repairs were needed. “Because it’s a wood structure, and it receives high-impact use, maintenance is an ongoing issue,” she said, ticking off a list of repairs that include replacement of the skating ramp surfaces and repairing 47 vinyl posts. Miller said part of the problem is also that kids are riding bikes in the park, "and it's not made for that." The township closed the park back in Dec. 2009 as well and did not reopen it until July 2011, after roughly $20,000 in repairs had been completed. …
