Boys’ Soccer Takes Lessons Learned Into Offseason

The Quakers finished 2011 with a 10-6-2 record and second round playoff loss to Timber Creek.

Scoring is always a hot topic when talking to coaches, no matter the sport, and that was a major theme for the Moorestown boys’ soccer team this year. Head coach Mike Sutcliffe knew if his team did not score, they would have trouble winning games. The Quakers struggled to find the back of the net early in the season, scoring only three goals in their first four games, being shut out twice. For the season, the Quakers were shut out five times in their six losses. Moorestown finished the year 10-6-2, falling to eventual group champion Timber Creek in the second round of the South, Group 3 Tournament. “I would say our sweeper Austin Harker, he had a great season, really learned the position and did a good job anchoring the back four," …

Penalty Kicks Doom Quakers in Playoffs

Moorestown lost the playoff game Friday to top-ranked Timber Creek.

On a squad as offensively gifted as the Timber Creek Regional High School boys’ soccer team, goalie Andrew Garcia can often go unnoticed. However, when the playoffs roll around, the pressure on goaltenders intensifies and the special goalies separate themselves from the pack. On Friday, Garcia showed how valuable an asset he is, derailing Moorestown's season with two penalty-kick stops to give Timber Creek a spot in the NJSIAA South Jersey Group III semifinals. One hundred minutes of soccer was not enough to separate No. 1 Timber Creek and No. 8 Moorestown. The game was tied 1-1 after regulation and two periods of overtime. Alex Kourahanis, Jeffrey Morgan and Sonimi Halladay each connected on their penalties and Garcia clinched the game …

Boys’ Soccer Rolls Over Central Regional in First Round of Playoffs

The Quakers scored four first half goals en route to a 6-1 win.

After struggling to score goals at the start of their season, the Quakers unloaded on Central Regional High School (8-6-2) Tuesday to reach the second round of the NJSIAA South, Group 3 Tournament. The Quakers defeated Central 6-1. Moorestown has scored 22 goals over the last six games, in which the team has gone 5-0-1. “We’re playing a lot better and the offense is clicking. That’s what we were lacking early in the season and I was so frustrated," head coach Mike Sutcliffe said. "We have been creating good chances all year, but the forwards weren’t finding the goal. They obviously are finding a way right now." The Quakers scored four first-half goals on Tuesday, forcing Central Regional to make a change at goalkeeper well before halftime…

Quakers Alumni Profile: John Pontillo

John Pontillo has taken what he learned at Moorestown and applied it not only in the classroom, but also on Swarthmore's soccer field.

Each week we'll be taking time out to get to know an alumnus from the Moorestown High School Athletic Department. In this week’s segment, Moorestown Patch sports editor Jim Vassallo spoke with former soccer player and current Swarthmore student John Pontillo about his time at Moorestown, how special Swarthmore is, and how he decided to play only soccer in college. Moorestown Patch: What is your major? John Pontillo: I am a double major in religion and economics. Patch: How did you choose Swarthmore? Pontillo: Swarthmore is a very special place. I certainly did not recognize its value when I was applying to school. I knew of the stellar academic reputation and the ideas of Quaker-ism that pervade campus, but I really didn't know what to …
