Councilman: Moorestown 'Lucky' to Have Community Theater

Councilman Greg Newcomer encourages residents to turn out and support community theater this weekend.

To the editor:

Those Interested in Moorestown musical theater have quite a weekend ahead.

The idea of summer musicals in Moorestown started in 1998, and since that time both MoorArts and the Moorestown Theater Company have continually provided enjoyable summer entertainment.

MoorArts will hold its final performances of Evita at 8 p.m. this Friday and Saturday at Moorestown High School.

You could actually enjoy two productions this weekend, as Moorestown Theater Company will open Bye Bye Birdie on Thursday, with repeat performances throughout this weekend and next. All performances will be held at William Allen Middle School.

I believe we are very lucky to have organizations devoted to bringing summer theater to our town. Many notable folks are responsible for bringing these productions to life: the actors and actresses who work to deliver the songs, lines and bits just right; the craftsmen that design the sets and scenes; the lighting and sound techs who help set the mood and tone; the costume designers who make each player look just right; the orchestra members who bring the music to life; and of course the directors, producers and managers who make all the elements work together. All these folks have worked very hard to bring musical theater right to our doorstep in Moorestown.

Why go to the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia, or stay home and watch another boring TV show? How about calling a few friends to go and see live Moorestown musical theater offered by these two great organizations?

I bet you’ll be glad you did ...

Greg Newcomer
Moorestown councilman and theater advocate
