Bail Upheld for Man Accused in Maple Shade Stabbing: Police

A man who lives down the street from the scene of Saturday's stabbing said it's a 'very nice neighborhood.'

A Burlington County Superior Court judge upheld accused killer John Borger IV's $750,000 bail during a court appearance Monday afternoon.

Authorities say Borger, 38, stabbed 44-year-old Mark Brooks to death outside his home on the 100 block of South Maple Avenue, near the intersection with East Gradwell Avenue, in Maple Shade Saturday night.

Borger, who lived in the Park Crossing Apartments on Maplewood Drive, was charged with murder Sunday after being questioned by police. He is lodged in Burlington County Jail.

Brooks was discovered around 10:30 p.m. Saturday by Borger's estranged wife, Kerri Borger, who arrived at the house and found Brooks on the ground outside, according to the Burlington County Times.

The Times reported Borger was charged in June with contempt for violating a restraining order his wife had against him, and that Brooks was Kerri Borger's boyfriend.

Authorities have so far not provided a motive for the murder, but said Brooks and Borger were acquaintances.

The tree-lined neighborhood where Brooks's body was found, roughly a mile from the Moorestown border, was quiet Monday morning.

A neighbor who lives a few doors down said he didn't know Brooks at all, and mentioned that the 44-year-old had just recently moved into the house down the street.

The neighbor, who identified himself as Karl but declined to give his last name, said he went to bed early Saturday and didn't hear anything overnight. He only found out what happened after waking up Sunday morning.

"This is a very nice neighborhood," he said. "We never have any problems."

Borger's murder charge will now be presented to a grand jury for indictment.
